So [livejournal.com profile] dilletante and I took a parkour class this weekend, and I'm still having trouble with some of the more difficult things I do in a day (sitting down, standing up, taking the stairs, walking). I've never been happier to be able to pee standing up.

Me: I took a parkour class today! We tried to jump over walls.
N: Parkour? ....like parcours?
Me: Yeah.
N: I want to do that!

Yes, yes you do.

The class was fascinating; I was in my preferred position of "near the bottom of the fitness ladder", which for some reason I usually find encouraging rather than demoralizing. There's nothing to live up to! I have already fulfilled my awesomeness quotient for the day just by showing up, and any trick I manage to land is pure icing.

This turned out to be a vital attitude. The teacher had a lot of smart things to say about how to work up to the various vaults, and even though we didn't have time for me to manage them all, I left feeling like I had a lot I could practice. Given that he was trying to teach all the basic types of parkour move to a class with 17-year-old boys who'd clearly been practicing in the parks for a while AND well-rounded 35-year-old moms, I'd say he did a bang-up job, and my quads would agree.

Maybe 45 minutes into the class, he set up a lower-height vault that the people who were having trouble could use, and I finally managed to land a few. And I got that feeling - that euphoric lump-in-my-throat feeling where I'm grinning so hard that I'm starting to cry and I realize ALL OF MY GYM CLASSES FAILED ME ALL ALONG, I DON'T CARE THAT I'M NOT A NATURAL, I LOVE THIS STUFF, I LOVE THIS STUFF, I LOVE THIS STUFF.

I regularly fall off of my shoes.

Not even heels - we're talking clogs, here. Sneakers. Anything with a sole at least 1" deep. I'll be walking down the street, or turning to reach something in the kitchen, or even just standing and shifting my weight, and suddenly my shoe will betray me, my ankle bending toward the floor as I sail awkwardly off to one side. It's usually slow enough that I hold my arms out and flap like a cartoon character. Mostly, it seems to unsettle people -- why is she doing that? Did something happen? No, nothing happened. Yes, I'm fine. I'm just falling off my shoes.

* The rain (reign) of little pink petals
* Extra snuggles
* Wind sprints, even lame ones
* My coffee buddy being back in the office
* A card from my kid that reads "maman je t'aime très tres tres fort"
* New bike horns with rhinestones onnem
* Still being a little high from the five-minute-photoshoots
* Not being broke
* Guy wearing one orange Converse Hi-Top and one turquoise one
* Lunch: avocado, red salt, delicious local hothouse tomatoes (!), fig yogurt, some cheese, and a plum. Hell yeah!
* Coming in to the office means I get to look out the office windows
* A perfecly dried bloom fell off the orchid this morning as I was waiting for the elevator. Now it is mine.

(things I wish I could change: I need more sleep, my left wrist hurts, my tire.)

I am so groggy this morning that I forgot my own food allergies and ordered an egg and cheese croissant. At least I left off the sausage...

My hungry bee:

A conversation on the way to the Friendly Toast on Saturday, as we were both squeezing through a hole in a bench:

N: We're squeezing through a bench!
M: Yup!
N: And it's easier for me because I'm tiny and small, and you're big and... well, I mean, is it okay if I say "fat"?
M: Sure!
N: And you're big and fat!
M: That is exactly why it's easier for you.
N: Some people don't like it when you say "fat". But you don't mind.
M: Yeah, some people don't like it, especially if you try to use it as a mean word. I don't mind, though. I think it's just descriptive.
N: YOU'RE STEPPING IN LAVA! DON'T STEP IN THE LAVA!

(Most serious conversations with her end sort of like that.)

Complicated! Complicated. I really don't mind if she says I'm fat, because I am more on the round side than, say, [livejournal.com profile] dilletante; all I can do is model being happy and active and healthy in my body how it is. Conveniently, this is pretty easy for me. But, seriously, all the big conversations happen when you're doing and expecting something else, don't they? And they're gone so quickly.

A note, because it matters! I mean the one that runs lengthwise, like a spine in the middle of your mouth where your palates fused together.

Okay, I need to go out dancing more often. It's *fun*.

Things that should be outlawed: having a stomach flu at the same time as back pain so bad you can't stand or walk or sit or roll over, for days.

Things that are wonderful: [livejournal.com profile] ceelove with helpful drugs and hands, [livejournal.com profile] dilletante keeping me company lying on the hardwood floor and watching Burn Notice, sitting on the retaining wall at Revere Beach while [livejournal.com profile] jojotbird and N run around and throw sand at each other, helpful company from [livejournal.com profile] spike.

I'm healthy and walking today -- the pain isn't gone, but it is enough better that I slept in a bed last night instead of on the floor. Time to take up yoga.

First, bad RSI-type arm pain. Then, debilitating vertigo for a day, bad enough that [livejournal.com profile] spike took me to the ER. Diagnosis: not a brain tumor! BPPV. Which is nice and all, but more or less seems to amount to "sometimes this shit just happens and you can't walk, surprise!"

Yeah so anyway last night I ended up at Sound Bites with [livejournal.com profile] redheadedmuse who caught me on film doing exactly what I had been doing before she whipped out the camera. I just wish it had been spicier.

I guess I haven't talked much about this. A month or so ago, I started doing Crossfit. Cut for blah blah exercise. )

'sick'

Yesterday I woke up at my usual time just as tired as when I went to bed, so I took a sick day and slept an extra FIVE HOURS, at which point I woke up feeling ... normal, if kinda slow.

I get the message, body. I'll sleep more. This time for real.

I'm not doing the gratitude project; I already try to give a lot of thanks to people for being awesome on a daily basis, and I think that I'm in general pretty in tune with the happy things in my life. This morning, though, I'm sort of brimming over with it. Here's what's on my mind, happiwise: cut for blah blah me me me blah. do not read if you do not want to hear chipper chipperness. )

It is perhaps unfair that when you run out of cope, run out of ability to deal with the world, when you can't even get dressed or cut your own meat, it is the people closest to you who have to deal with your bitchy self-centered pain and drama about not being able to get dressed or cut your own meat. And by you, I mean me.

I had a sunburn of epic proportions, recently. Bad like I probably should have gone to the hospital bad, and even with ibuprofen and aloe and lidocaine I couldn't sleep well for days. Everything sucked, everything was hard. I was lucky enough to have taken a few days off of work already, and I'm lucky to have the kind of life where if I need to, I can sleep in (ha ha sleep) and get a couple extra hours of rest. I'm lucky to have the kind of relationship with my body where I know that even though driving and sitting in chairs is excruciating, biking 12 miles will be totally fine (and in fact, it was the best thing I did for my body the two days we did that). Good thing I did, too -- it's hard for me to be completely wiped out while simultaneously having my muscles screaming at me because I hadn't exercised. I was pretty much afraid to even show people my skin for a week, and even after that much time people would wince and gasp when I uncovered my back. It was a wreck. But it's basically healed now. I don't think I have any scars, though I bet I'll have the tanlines of that particular bathing suit for a year. Maybe more.

Saturday, I went canoeing with [livejournal.com profile] veek and N on a lake in Maine. The first island we got to had some broken glass, so we found another, where we clambered on rocks and ate huckleberries and blueberries (highbush and lowbush) and watched ducks jump up to gobble berries from high branches. It came time to go home and make food and eat supper and read stories, so we paddled all the way back. But for this three mile lake jaunt, I was in the back the whole way, using the same side the whole way, and not thinking about my arms at all. I followed this up with some failure to take advil and then recreational dehydration; this led to poor sleep, which led to a day of complete grouchiness until some time in the afternoon I realized that my left arm hurt so much I couldn't pick stuff up, even towels. I couldn't even point at things. I couldn't pick up my kid or use both hands to get myself water. This came as a complete surprise to me, which made me into a bit of a grouchopotamus, because my left hand? I use it a lot. It's Monday and I couldn't even imagine biking today, which sort of put a wrench into our plans to have another Family Bike Jaunt. But [livejournal.com profile] veek and [livejournal.com profile] spike took care of me, and [livejournal.com profile] dilletante takes care of me, and later I will ask [livejournal.com profile] ceelove if she can poke my arm at some point to tell me what I did and what I should do next. It feels just like muscle fatigue, but it's in a place where that is extremely inconvenient at best; will I be able to get to work tomorrow? Will I have to take the train?

I realize that these are pretty cushy problems -- two temporary, self-inflicted, stupidity-based injuries that will heal and go away, in an environment where I am surrounded by people who love me and want to help even when I hate accepting help and cry about it. But it SUCKS to not be able to live my life by myself. I am reminded of how much I disliked my own pregnancy-induced helplessness and all of its associated problems. I got my skin back, now I want my hand back. My body! Mine!
moominmolly: (triathlon shadow)
I'm 5'8". Yesterday morning, I weighed myself, and I weighed 174 pounds. Before pregnancy I weighed between 150 and 160, depending on the time of year and what I'd been doing recently. Right after pregnancy, it was just south of 200, and I stabilized around 190 for a while.

I thought that that part ought to go outside the cut, at least. )
moominmolly: (Default)
It's strong, it's mine, and it almost always tells me what I need to know. Today it said: you are sick! sleep all day!, and so I did, and I'm feeling much better. Not better enough to stay up much longer, though, so back to bed it is. *whump*
moominmolly: (Default)
At long, long last, I feel like my body is back to something like normal. I've been biking to work constantly for about a month. This last weekend, [livejournal.com profile] dilletante and I holed up in a hotel room with a jacuzzi and spent all day Saturday at a climbing gym. And today, I'm drinking black coffee at True Grounds. BLACK COFFEE. I haven't had a cup of black coffee go unpunished since I was pregnant. My arms are sore, my legs are muscley, and my coffee is black. It's a good day.

because, when I have a mild migraine and hours later the ache is fading away but my head still hurts, a little bit of it applied to my temples and forehead relieves the pain from having tensed all of my scalp and facial muscles for so long. Enough that I can feel the little spot above my right eyebrow that I missed, because it still hurts.

It can't treat the underlying ache, but ooooh can it relieve the associated muscle strains.

whee!
