[Poll #1575379]

A note, because it matters! I mean the one that runs lengthwise, like a spine in the middle of your mouth where your palates fused together.

From: [identity profile] sinboy.livejournal.com
I've got kind of a furrow, but that's in the soft palette. No ridge.

Date: 2010-06-07 02:09 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] moominmolly.livejournal.com
My ridge is probably a 1/4 - 1/2" deep protrusion into my mouth. A furrow! Wild.

From: [identity profile] moominmolly.livejournal.com
Ha! How could you not notice it? It's IN YOUR MOUTH! :) It is sensitive, though.

Upon reflection, I may have spent an unnatural amount of time trying to make different unusual sounds with my tongue.

Runs where? I would say "Yeah?", but given you have this poll at all, I'm assuming you don't mean the alveolar ridge, since afaik, everyone has one.

Date: 2010-06-07 02:17 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] moominmolly.livejournal.com
Hmm -- I have a spine jutting into my mouth that runs from behind the alveolar ridge backwards across my palate and towards my velum. If the alveolar ridge is what I think it is.

Yeah, I assumed this too, and went through the same reasoning, and concluded that "lengthwise" must mean "perpendicular to that one".

Now I am wondering how it would affect singing, and if people in my choir are more or less likely to have one. I find the concept very odd.

Which ridge, the alveolar ridge (the ridge behind the top teeth) or the fusion of the plates of the hard palate (the ridge that runs longitudinally from front to back)?

Never ask an ex-speech-language-pathologist anything orally anatomical without specifics. ;-)

FWIW, I always squeed when i got to do oral-facial exams on little kids. Because their rugae (the two bumps of the alveolar ridge) were SO SO ADORABLE. Little and sharp, like kitten claws.

YOU! You are the one I want to ask. I'm asking about the plate fusion longitudinal one. Does everyone have one, or not?

Now that I think about it and probe I have a very very very shallow one that bisects mine as though it is bisecting my head through the midline through the center of the nose. Is that what you mean?

Yes. Mine is really enormous, I think, and for some reason it's on my mind today.

I don't know what "lengthwise" means in this context. The thing I think you are talking about runs the direction from the front of my body toward the back of my body. There's no ridge running from the left side to the ride side.

From: [identity profile] metagnat.livejournal.com
Okay, so, strictly speaking, I do now know what you're talking about, since you brought it up, but I don't seem to have any ridges on the top of my mouth and I never knew about anyone else having them.

I think it's interesting how we can know people really well and still not know what it's like to live in their bodies.

I never considered that people might have smooth mouth-rooves until I brought it up in conversation once and got some blank stares.

Ditto. I don't feel any kind of a ridge with my tongue...oh, wait, do you mean way back there where I feel like I'm going to choke just reaching back that far? I do feel a tiny bit of something...now wait, I can feel it slightly forward of that...okay, that's weird. I've felt that before, but only when I have a painfully sore throat or something. Also, I can't tell how far forward it goes, but it certainly doesn't go all the way to my teeth, as far as I can tell, not even near. I never realized that it is a single ridge, because I'm almost spraining muscles just to feel it at all, let alone scope out the rest of the area for comparison. I just assumed that there were various cables and tendons and junk criss-crossing the roof of my mouth under the... skin mucous membrane?

I have a wide, flat bump (I wouldn't call it a ridge, it's the width of my thumb) with a furrow down the middle...

Can't feel it at all with my tongue, and had never noticed it until today, when after a few minutes reading responses I poked around with my finger. I appear to have one in one spot in my mouth (kind of the place directly underneath my nostrils?) but not in front of that or behind.

Narrow where it comes down off the ridge supporting the upper teeth, turning into a bit of a knob at the back just before the soft palate kicks in. Starts out fairly flat and gets sharper up until the gno

b.
