This weekend, while accompanying [livejournal.com profile] redheadedmuse on a Costco run, I was reduced to shaking, sweating, and tears by an allergic reaction to being in the same WAREHOUSE as cooking bacon. I went home, took some Benadryl, curled up in bed, and lost a few hours. However, I did get the following discovery out of it:

PORK-CAT SYNDROME.

Seriously, best name ever. Ever.

I didn't read the link, but it sounds easy to deal with - just don't pork cats!

Oh, my! Having that strong of an allergic reaction to simply being in the same VERY large building as cooking bacon sounds very distressing. I'm so sorry that you have this to deal with.

P. S.

You probably know this, but it's such important information that I thought I'd repeat it, anyway.

Allergies often (not always, but often) get worse with each subsequent exposure. So if you're shaking and sweating by just being in the same warehouse as cooking bacon, you'll need to be very careful to limit your exposures to pork, so you don't progress to the can't-breathe stage of allergic reaction.

Are you also allergic to cats, or is the cat-pork link just for fun?

Yes -- the pork reactions, in fact, get worse with each exposure for me as well. This is the first time I've had a reaction to something airborne; not a pleasant feeling. Under normal circumstances, I'd just have left the building, but there were three kids and there was lots of shopping to do, so I figured I would just walk through the unpleasantness, but: surprise!

I am mildly allergic to cats, and have been reading lots of papers and such about pork-cat syndrome. Turns out it might explain a lot of my random unexplained health problems. I'm definitely seeing a doctor about it.

MY EYES ARE SO WIDE

FYI "bacos" contain not pork. I had a friend with a pork allergy who informed me of this.

I love bacos! I use them liberally!

Someone I know has a wonderful story about moving into a house with several vegans and discovering a huge container of Bacos in the cupboard.

"Hey, don't freak out, but I think one of your houseguests left a thing of bacon bits in the kitchen."

"Those are vegan."

"No, I said bacon bits."

"Those are vegan."

"I... bacon... the..."

"Those are vegan."

I haven't been able to eat bacos since discovering this.

Heh. And I love them all the more!

Costco sells enormous bags of bacon crumbles made of actual bacon. They're like non-vegan Bacos.

He really need to write a lot of stellar papers for the purpose of being published after he's gone so that "many of Posthumus papers were published posthumously. In a fit of literary terrorism, he decided to study the effects of posts on the humus".

I'm really sorry you had to deal with that. :-(

At the same time, thank you for providing supporting evidence that I'm not imagining that I'm allergic to the smell of popcorn. People have always accused me of saying that just because I don't like popcorn. (Despite the fact that I start sneezing like crazy and usually end up with a headache...)

While I am stupidly allergic to pork, kitties just make me sniffle. I'm okay with a sniffle.

Boy, do I remember how this started. I'm so sorry it's progressed like this. Can acupuncture help with this set of allergies?

I don't know! It's worth a try.

I also remember how it started. :)

I would urge to be watchful of your cat sniffle, and talk to your doctor about it. That's how my cat allergy started, and where it stayed for a while. In the last year and a half, it's deteriorated to the point where I can't even be in the same room where a cat *used* to live, even if it's been cleaned since then. The ramp-up was very sudden and drastic. If you are noticing a new reaction to pork as well, please be careful of the cats.

Thank you for the story! I'm sorry that got so bad for you. I admit I'm a little cavalier about the kitty allergy, but I've had it for a few years and it has never gotten worse than my mother's. That said, I'm going to maybe steer clear of *owning* cats for a little while, and I am trying to pay attention to all allergic-type reactions right now.

One thing that has really helped me is minimizing rugs in my home and trying to wash curtains regularly.

Also using swiffers a lot.

Also ceiling fan blades.

I've always been "meh whatever, only crazy people wash curtains." But after finding out I'm allergic to dust, mold, and 50 bazillion types of pollen I've been trying to minimize dust in my life. Washing or um. Replacing.

I might be up for a little livingroom replacement spree. My thick navy curtains are a pale robin's-egg color on the outside, and also probably 50% cat hair by volume.

I've vacuumed them. Not sure why laundering didn't occur to me. Maybe because I hate cleaning.

No kitties wrapped in bacon for you.

Seriously though, I'm very sorry this happened. I had no idea your pork allergy was this bad. Yikes.

Oh, yeah, I don't usually talk about it. It clearly crossed into "hospitalizable" territory several years back; [livejournal.com profile] dilletante is urging me to go see my doctor and ask if I should have an epi-pen. Meh.

This is one of the reasons I loved traveling in Japan so much: All of the Asia, none of the pork!
