I would say "it's funny how OBVIOUS dream metaphors are, isn't it?" but it's possible not everyone would get as much out of a dream about friction shifters vs indexed shifters as I did.

As soon as you say it, I can see what a great metaphor that would be for so much!

Last night I dreamed about riding on a bike that was still being assembled, so all the components weren't quite there yet. hmmm.

It WAS a great metaphor. Specifically: I love friction shifters, but in the dream it was a problem that they had really slipped quite a long way without me adjusting them. Since they didn't click-clack-click-clack, I'd just let them go, you know? And eventually my proprioception of where the shifting points were was entirely off, and I discovered that I couldn't even access some of my gears anymore...

Love your dream. How did the semi-bike ride, in the dreamworld?

That's an awesome dream.

I'm glad to know the names for those two shifting systems now. It looks like bikes have come a long way since I last rode one, but I always preferred the friction shifters. Index shifters never seemed to line up quite right. OTOH, my index shifters sometimes shifted by themselves . . .

probably in all cases I needed to know how to better maintain a bicycle.

Oh Hmm... letting things just slide further and further out of adjustment..... hmmm...

The unfinished bike was really uncomfortable to ride and didn't feel very safe, I was trying to bend the handle bars to shape while riding it for instance. But I was pretty pleased about having my own custom bike, made my own way, even if it was more awkward than a ready-made one that would have been good enough.
