So, my friend has this problem. He -- well, okay, it's me, all right? Just don't tell anyone. I mean, I turn on my AirPort card and I see lots of wireless networks and I can even connect to them! But after a minute or two, I just can't hang on anymore, and suddenly, I drop them all. Not just the one I was connected to, but all of them. It's all black. I can't see a damn thing. Maybe I'm losing my mind. I fumble around in the dark a while, but nothing changes. If I turn my AirPort card off and back on again, there they all are! So I connect; two minutes later, it's the same damn thing. I tried self-medicating with an Apple Software Update and a night of rest, but no dice.

Help me! I hate being tied to the wall! Helllp!

No ideas, except maybe reset the airport card? THat would be my next step. I do feel your pain, though -- our DNS numbers got screwy a while back and I absolutely HATED being wired again. I live for wireless networks. How else can you cook dinner and check your email at the same time?

I never realized how seriously grumpy it would make me to have to plug into the wall again. I mean, isn't that why I have this tiny pocket-sized 12" laptop in the first place? I can check my email from *anywhere*! Anywhere within range, at least.

What do you mean, reset the airport card? I haven't supported Macs in about six years. :) I asked it to turn off the airport card and then turn it back on again, and that does the same thing as power-cycling the machine or closing the lid and opening it back up again -- I get two more minutes of connectivity. Raurgh! Also, the warranty just expired.

I suppose I could drag myself in to the Apple Store and see if they'll talk to me.

I have an iBook (I think you have a Powerbook?) and installed my own card years ago. On the Ibook, everything is under the keyboard -- I have two tabs, near my escape key and CD Eject key, and the whole thing lifts out, and the card is underneath there. It's about the size of a credit card, maybe, and can pop in and out. But if it's not physical (my screen, for instance, goes black if you move it wrong, and a wiggle wakes it up) then maybe it won't help. Unless there's an update for the card? Have you run software update lately? (I'm notoriously bad for just cancelling out of my updater, but i tmight be worth running that, too.)

You can always just go ask your local Genius!

Ahhh, literally reset. I'll try that tonight. (And yeah, it's a Powerbook. I'm sure the internet will tell me how to do it.)

I ran the updater yesterday, hoping that would get it, but no dice. I'll probably take it in to be fiddled with soon. Nothing against the Geniuses, but I really hate waiting in line for them behind 20 people with flaky iPods, so I try to avoid it when possible.

I have no idea how to help you, but I am giggling at this time, and I cannot truthfully say that it was not caused by you.
