Is it just me, or are carnivorous robots kind of unsettling?

I don't particularly miss my Pepperland apartment, but I'm thrilled to find out that I once lived in a BIG GAY SOCIAL HUB.

Here. But I'm warning you -- really, don't even try.

Some of you may remember my excitement about the Octopus on yo head Flickr pool. Here are my past contributions:

mr. tako & natalie

octopus on mah head

...and yes, I do need to take another octopus-on-N's-head photo. Anyway, I was poking around Threadless today and found this: Octopus on yo shirt. After calming down from a comPLETEly inappropriate squeal, I got to wondering: is this really a hipster t-shirt design based on an obscure Flickr pool about cephalopods? And a bit of investigation revealed this Flickr page, which makes me think: yes, yes it is.

(I really need that shirt now.)

My. I got a little teary reading this. I'm not done yet (what I wouldn't give to have it on paper), but this is the account of a crazy long-distance bike trek two women took together in 1944. No trailers, no superlow triple chainrings, no lycra. Here they are, just about to leave:

The Momification of Michelle Obama. An article worth reading just on its own merits, regarding her curiously retro position given her qualifications... but really, I'm mostly posting this so that I can type the word "momification" a few more times.

MOMIFICATION.

(i) I'm teaching the intro to stilting class at Wildfire! Gosh. This is exciting and a little scary. Anyone want to come over and help me make stilts?

(ii) Did you know that they make bikes for toddlers? Natalie has been barking up this tree for a couple of months now (pointing out kids riding bikes on the sidewalks and asking for one, etc), but it was only tonight that I learned about balance bikes. Go watch that video (or the hundreds of others just like it), if you have a second. It makes me want to go back in time and be two years old just so I could learn to bike on a bike with no pedals.

(iii) dogorwizard.com.

This ride report is not mine, but it is truly awesome and crazy in all the right ways. Read it if you have even a passing interest in weird bike stuff and travelogues.

It is important that I send you this link right now: postcardsfromyomomma. Real little emails from people's moms. I'm kind of in love with all of them.

All right, there is now officially a flickr group for everything.

From Junkfood Science, via [livejournal.com profile] the_xtina, an article on the Minnesota Starvation Study (about the effects of dieting on healthy adults) that I found quite interesting.

EDIT, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD: What I found interesting was: the mental effects of this deprivation on the healthy, normal-weight patients; the idea of patriotic conscientious objectors in a medical study; and the attitudes surrounding the study in general. The whole article was chock full of interesting attitudes toward the world. The general tone of the article and the obvious bias of the author are not my own.

Hjälp!

If I wanted a small piece of one-way mirror -- say, 15" square or so, but really I'm not picky -- where do you suppose I could pick one up, locally?

Note: This has nothing at all to do with cheeseburgers in cans.

Okay, today's Scary Go Round made me happy.
