When I'm on the train, I sometimes (often? usually?) wear earbuds with nothing playing through them. Just silence -- or maybe I'll play some white noise, but anyway, none of that unrelenting INPUT.

Makes it easier to look at things, and we all know I love looking at things.

Recommended.

I do this often - I have big-ass headphones which cut out some of the background noise. I do it in the office and sometimes in transit.

Yay!

I also love doing this in the office, where I'm more likely to play white noise. But there, it's more of a focusing tool, to keep me doing my work and not eye-wandering around the universe. On the train, I feel like it does a very different thing, and turns me outward rather than inward. Both very interesting.

Yes yes yes yes! Me too. And while running or kissing or lifting.

I totally close my eyes in many instances when I am concentrating on other senses, too. It's helpful.

I do this too, though some music performances (jazz) enough visual interest that I want to watch the performers.

i'll watch a good show, and i like to watch guitarists for the education :) but there's something about having the music and reducing other input i do find special.

Oh, yes indeed! :) There's some music I think can only be fully appreciated that way.

This is why I particularly enjoy going to the symphony. It's dark and quiet, so no one will think twice if I just close my eyes and exist along with the music.

I have big earmuff style headphones which work well for that; I sometimes just but them on to convince talkactive seat-mates that I'm not interested in listening to them.

FWIW, something I've found very relaxing is to play something quietly on the headphones that doesn't have a lot of dynamic range (I usually use Vivaldi string concerti, but YMMV), *after* putting in earplugs. That cuts out or masks nearly all the background noise, and what I can hear is pleasant without requiring any attention.

Oh man, I love those moments on the train when I've put my earbuds in but haven't plugged them into my phone or turned any music/podcasts on yet. I feel so sneaky!

What kind of white noise?

I hadn't thought about premeditating this! But, it turns out often I'll put on earphones at the office, planning to play music, and I get distracted with work and wind up sitting there engaged, and hours go by before I notice that I'm not playing any music.... people tend to leave me alone, but I can hear them if I need to. It's nice. ...

[livejournal.com profile] istemi taught me to do this while walking. Then you only have to smile at people! Love it.
