fennel introduced me to a new game: googlewhacking! The object is to find a pair of two English words that, when entered into Google, produce only one search result.

Your score is the product of how many hits each word gets on its own. The googlewhack site lists "cartographer hairballs" as an example (56,100 x 12,200 = 684,420,000). Really low scores and really high scores are both cool.

Here are my three favorites so far. It really does feel like naming bands. :)

cthonian eyeliner 29,393,000
misanthropic sellotape 189,924,000
pleistocene headrush 1,524,000,000

Some friends of mine have recently been playing a similar game: Their goal is to find word pairs the return 0 hits on google. Both words have to be correctly spelled dictionary words (they've been using dictionary.com as the agreed upon reference), and they can't be plurals or gerunds or similar variants.

I think I like your version of the game better, though. It's more subtle, and the restrictions on word choice are built into the game: for a higher score, you want words that appear a lot on their own.

I've actually found it's pretty easy to find word pairs that don't show up at all. At least, I come across a bunch of zero-hits while playing it this way. :)
