I'm fantasizing today. Let's say you had NO IDEA what I do for work (which is probably true of most of you), and all you knew was that I wanted a change of career.

What real, achievable thing in the world should I be doing instead? Something that plays to my strengths and allows me to make something, somewhere more awesome just by showing up and being ME at it.

I could imagine you going into photographic journalism. Or storyboarding / designing events or event spaces. Or illustrating graphic novels with photography.

Which I say entirely selfishly, because I would love to see your work as such.

(P.S. There's a bit of a running joke that [livejournal.com profile] longueur should be an emergency statistician. Freelance troubleshooter isn't far off.)

:) I think that's the dream career that probably wouldn't actually work in person. If I were independently wealthy, it is what I would do with my time, but I fear I would be bad at running that type of business and also bad at working for someone else at it.

But perhaps that's just cynicism...

You're fantastic at speaking other people's languages, including children's. I could see you teaching -- not in front of a classroom necessarily, but maybe by making educational videos? doing usability design for educational software? Of any kind.

I guess "runnin' thangs" is not actually a job.

Your strengths are problem solving, languages, photography and chilling out customers. Too bad teaching photography in Montreal isn't particularly feasible without an extra citizenship.

Whatever you do, can I be your lackey? Everyone needs a lackey.

You have NO IDEA how much I love spy thrillers. :) In fact, it was a combination of a tempting but not-quite-right job prospect from another nerdy company and watching a few episodes of Covert Affairs that brought this into relief for me. :)

In all seriousness, one planning hurdle here is trying to show up 100% for being a parent AND 100% for a job. What I want is a job where I have awesome responsibility, authority, creativity, and flexibility.. from 8:30-5, Monday through Friday.

Yeah, the time constraint takes out my first choice, which would be "ringleader." (I mean that in the literal majordomo of the center ring, of course.)

My second thought was "full-time grassroots philanthropist". ;)

Something in a prototyping or experimental or blue-sky firm/part of a firm, where your job involves starting a gazillion out-of-the-box things while someone else gets to evaluate and/or finish them, decide on their suitability for the broader corporate strategy going forward. Starting projects, and involving other people in them (whether by management or evangelism). I expect the industry matters much less than the creativity and talent of the people.
