[Scene: two parents and a kid lolling in bed. The alarm goes off; D wakes up, I wake up, N snoozes mightily.]

Me: I think she's asleep.
N: *ZZZZZZZZZZ*
D: Seriously! It's funny.
Me: Yeah. *laugh*
N: [sleeepily] YEAH, because the frogs are eating the pretty umbrellas! *sleepy giggles*

*uncontrollable quiet laughter from parents*

N: Why are you laughing?
Me: Because you said a funny dream thing and I liked it.
N: IT IS REAL!

Um okay.

Natalie and I should talk

"Because the frogs are eating the pretty umbrellas!"

I'm hard of hearing, and my brain works very hard to make real words out of the phonemes my ears manage to pick up, but the real words don't always make sense when assembled into a sentence. Norman will say something, and what I hear is often an awful lot like, "because the frogs are eating the pretty umbrellas." I tell him what I've heard so that he knows which phonemes to emphasize when he repeats what he actually said, but the danger in this is that sometimes he likes the bizarre sentence I came up with too much to tell me what he actually said.

Gotta watch those frogs -- they're voracious! :-)

You have no idea how often Aaron has this conversation with me.

Next time it rains and you can't find an umbrella because the frogs ate them, you won't find it so funny.

I mean, maybe I'll be able to find the ugly ones. Who knows?

But if *N* wants the pretty umbrellas she'll be unhappy. And you know what that means.

That is creepier than it has any right being.

[livejournal.com profile] rollick has or had that exact umbrella, and used it often when we were meeting people in a crowded park for outdoor films and the like. Very effective.

N sounds like Delirium from the Sandman graphic novels. Not for the first time.

I would have had SO much trouble with the suppressed laughter, I'm sure I'd have woken her properly!

That's *adorable*!!!

I love dreamlogic. It manages to be so familiar and yet so alien at the same time. I often wake up with concepts quite clear in my mind... that cannot be explained, in any rational way, to the waking. It's as close to feeling like Morpheus as I ever get.
