I haven't seen Up yet. I probably will. But when I first read the synopsis, something snapped: AAAUUUUGH YET ANOTHER ADVENTURE MOVIE ABOUT A BOY OMFG. I think I bored everyone that day with my blah blah no movies about girls blah blah blah. But all I've seen so far are people talking about how good it was, or how sad, or possibly both. Nothing new there, really. So it was wonderful to catch this on twitter: "Ask Pixar to make a movie about a girl? Why, that's just P.C. B.S.!", referencing this open letter on NPR.org, entitled "Dear Pixar, from all the girls with band-aids on their knees". Read them both. It won't take long. (Also of note: a column about the Bechdel rule, and how hard it is to find movies that fit it.)

No point here, just life as usual.

I was everso sad that my sister wouldn't buy my nephew Dora underoos when he asked for them. She tries so hard to be gender-neutral, but even she couldn't overcome her maternal worries about the teasing he would get from his peers for wearing pink.

They make Dora underwear for 4-5 year olds at least that is mostly white and red (speaking as a father who recently brought some).

When I shop for my girl, we often go to the girls section first and then go to the boys section to see if there is anything we like better.

I blame my mother for infecting her with the princess virus, but I suppose she would have caught it from school eventually. I have a friend who was successful in warping her daughters princess love into fairy love.

Oh, while I'm here let me promote a book which I think is called the Paperbag Princess about a princess who rescues a prince, discovers that he wants her to be all dainty and pretty, and the *dumps him* to go off and have more adventures.
