I want a little clicker, a handheld counter thing, so that I can hit a button every time I think about sex. I'm really curious. I think I'd especially like to see a little graph showing the times of the button-presses so that I could see when I was more and less likely to let myself, er, wander. It would have to be small enough to tote around all the time, though, and not be a nuisance -- pilot-based solutions would really not work. Ideally, I'd also like to see the graphs of a thousand other people who had clickers as well, but that seems unlikely.

I'd carry one of those hand-clickers around. It would at least produce a daily total, if not a time-dependant graph...

I can estimate 10-20 times in a MONTH that i have thought about sex.

What I find interesting for me is that it varies so much! I can go long periods without thinking about it really at all, but then there will be times when it's just all over the place to me. Especially in long, boring meetings. Maybe more useful would be a multi-year graph of my sex thoughts over time...

There are watches with "lap counters", but most of them seem to stop at 99. I mean, I have no idea what the number would turn out to be. Why limit myself?

Home-modded digital watches. Hmmm.

You know, if it's that frequently...
There are watches you can use to count bpms... Just note the frequency, not the absolutes. And hold down the counter while you're actually thinking about it. I mean, does thinking twice briefly about it in a minute really count twice as much as a 10 minute fantasy?

this is the best plan ever.

here is the item you are looking for. they're only nine bucks a pop.

in fact, i think this is such a great idea that i'm going to order one of these counters for this very purpose. who else wants in? a bulk order will save on shipping.

it's currently thursday afternoon. respond to this comment by 4:30 pm tomorrow (that's friday, june 7) if you want me to order a counter for you. or email vecna_99@NOSPAMyahoo.com after removing NOSPAM.

provided you're located more or less in the Boston area, i'll be happy to deliver your counter (and take your nine bucks) once they arrive. if you're not in the Boston area, PayPal $9 to the email address given above, and we'll chat. :)

i can't wait to see the statistics from this!

Which is also a problem. It'd be cool if we had something that could record each individual date/time datum. We'd be able to make *much* more elaborate graphs with that information...

A not-quite-as-handy but geekier alternative is to take a cheap pocket calculator, enter +1, cover over everything but the = key, and then hit = when you want to add to the count.

*shudder* I think the sex-thought-clicker is a fantastic idea (though, like others, my graph would be more interesting on a num-thoughts-per-day basis rather than num-thoughts-per-hour), but that clicker is the exact model we used at Doc. It'd just make me think of betrayal and bitterness. Not that I need that much help...

Wouldn't thinking about thinking about sex, alter how often you think about it? How can you measure when you know you're measuring? And how often would you think about thinking about sex? Would you count that?

I don't think that thinking about thinking about sex counts as a sex thought. It has to be honestly carnal. :) I think it would alter my count for a little while, but that it would quickly settle back down to what's passing for normal right now. Maybe I'm wrong! No idea.

You could get one of those toe clickers that professional card counters/gamblers use that are hidden in the toe of their shoes. It would make things easier as you wouldn't even need to have a hand free to click.

For what it's worth, "real" card counters don't use clickers... they're too difficult to reset when the count goes to zero (i.e., the deck is shuffled). I suppose you could come up with situations in which a clicker might be useful, but it's pretty certain to blow your cover, and you're really better off just learning to count in your head.

Anyway, even if you could find a clicker which could decrement the values in addition to incrementing them, many of the better counting systems value cards as fractional values, such as +1.5, -0.5, and so on. In blackjack, anyway -- I don't know much about counting systems for other games, since most other casino games aren't beatable under even the best of circumstances

problem (?) with this suggestion

Date: 2002-06-06 12:26 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] crs.livejournal.com
This runs into the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle in a big way - you can't measure a thing without affecting it.

If you go through with this, you will now have a little "sex talisman" you are carrying around with you. When your hand reaches down to your pocket and you realize you are carrying the clicker, your mind will wander to thinking about the reason you're carrying it, and you'll think about sex. *click*

Is this a problem with the idea? Depends on your goals. :)

I think this is more likely to reduce the amount of time I spend thinking about sex, because as soon as I click the counter I'll feel silly consciously going back to whatever I was thinking before. But still, too interesting not to try doing.
