Although he's not super-local, I believe the dentist of my childhood is still practicing in Concord, MA. I can't find a website, but contact info is here.
They were really good at explaining and talking to kids, and willing to do any number of silly things to make it all okay. (Once, he did an entire exam on a kid with the kid upside down.) Also, when I was there, they had adorable little white dogs who would sit on your lap, although they were quite old by the time I was in high school!
I don't know if he specifically does kid stuff, but Dr. Nager of Belmont Dental is seriously amazing. He's really calm and gentle, and good at keeping people calm. Also his staff is good about noticing when you might be in distress and stopping/pausing to see what can help you feel better.
I use Dr. Nager for my dentist, too. Have not yet asked if he does kids, but am in about the same boat as you.
Also, I'm on a local moms list from which I have gleaned - RUN SCREAMING from that "kids dentistry" place in Porter Sq Galleria. Something about small kids parents being asked to go into the waiting room and then prevented from entering the room when their child was crying. Ack.
