What's the point of going to see the midnight opening night showing of Star Wars if you don't get to see obsessive costumed fans? I mean, come on, only one guy? And he only had the paduan rat-tail or whatever that's all about.

So what did you think of it? Am I in the minority to think that Lucas should learn that less is quite often more?

Well -- not to give out too many spoilers, but I felt like it didn't have soul. In a lot of ways, it was better than Episode I (guh), but the fight scenes weren't nearly as elegant and there wasn't as much dramatic tension. I felt like it was a movie designed entirely to fill in plot points and back story, and it glossed over a couple of pretty significant bits.

It wasn't as dark as I was hoping it would be! It seems like they're saving that for Episode III.

Good bits:
  • It wasn't AS ham-handed or as poorly acted as Episode I. (And yes, I actually went back and watched the older ones to make sure I wasn't romanticizing them. I wasn't. The acting just didn't suck as much.)
  • Yoda-fu.
  • Natalie Portman: totally hot.
  • Having recently watched Velvet Goldmine, I kept thinking of a glam Obi-Wan.
  • The best Jedi mind-trick ever.
  • Diner!

But, for all the light saber action, we didn't get one single combat that was as tense and sexy as the big Darth Maul scene.

So, I suppose I agree that less is more, but more is ALSO more. There should have been more tension and less flashy CGI...

Something that may have been glossed over in my previous comment -- I did actually enjoy the movie. It wasn't earth-shatteringly great, but then, I didn't expect it to be.
