Someone sent me a link to Bruce Sterling's closing speech at the CFP this year, and all I could think was: malfing? malfing?! How did this term slip entirely under my radar until now?

I found it much more interesting because he is one of the few people who actually understands what the "shadow government" is for.

I am old enough to remember when, in the early 1990s, the media was playing the similar Reagan/Bush measures up as some kind of evil conspiracy..and blithely writing in ignorance of the fact that the Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations had done similar things.

Decapitation strategies are big things. Cut off the head, and the body will be unable to function. Granted, most societies can grow new heads, but in the interim, you can do what you want to the body.

It is left as an exercise for the reader to figure out what al Qaida would do to the body if it was without a head. (hint: it wouldn't be pretty.)

I'm quite fond of the bit at the end, where he talks about missing his Swiss Army knife. And says the same thing I've been saying since they "beefed up" airline security by taking away everything that vaguely resembles an item that no hijacker will ever be able to use to take over a plane again. Like he said, they used that method up. No one will ever be able to hijack a plane with a knife again, because all it takes to stop it is one person being hijacked to weigh the possibility of dying in a fiery crash with hundreds or thousands of others against the possibility of dying alone, but dying a hero and deciding on the latter..

I dunno, I use malfing regularly... it's a game term in ASL.

I was amused that he, Sterling, used "Ono-Sendai Cyberspace Seven"...
