We don't think she knows what they mean yet, since she cycles through about a thousand in the span of a few seconds. For example:

All of the baby books say, "at birth, your newborn can focus at a distance of 8 - 10 inches away from his face -- which is, conveniently, about the distance from your nipple to your face!" Well, that may be true, but it also seems completely irrelevant. Natalie absolutely refuses to look in my face when breastfeeding. She really doesn't appear to give a damn that there's a face attached to the breast, since she'd much rather look through the curtain of my hair, or where the wall meets the ceiling, or really anywhere OTHER than in my eyes. This was pronounced enough that I actually asked the internet if she was autistic. (It said "no! jeez! chill.")

I do love that it almost always puts her to sleep, though:

Even late, late at night.

Also, for a while, I was obsessed with this little lip-hangnail she had. It was all I could do not to lean in and lovingly gnaw it off for her. [livejournal.com profile] zogathon assured me that it was just a nursing callus, and that it would fall off. Natalie, of course, didn't seem to care at all. It is now gone; she left it on my areola one day, without so much as a how-do-you-do.

Have you ever really LOOKED at your hands? Ha ha ha. Natalie seems to do this a lot. We think she's on drugs.

Rory (who, can you believe it, had never actually read Declare!) seems to have accepted Natalie in a half-wary, half-hungry kind of way:

And finally, the little fleecy snowsuit that we have to put on her in the carseat has perhaps a bit TOO much room to grow in:

There is a snowsuit like picture of me a few weeks after the birth. Since I was born near Xmas and didn't leave the hospital until very close to that time, they sent me home in a gigantic stocking. What a little personality she seems to already have :)

She's still really into contrast, right? Your eyes must not be all that high-contrasty...I mean, they're all mixed-up colors and fine details and confusing...whereas your hair? Dark stuff with light behind it? Awesome!

(also, hee hee, beer clothes! :)

I'm sure that's why she's not completely into faces in general, but the thing I was finding odd is that her face-interest is SO much lower when she's eating. Eating, of course, demanding FURIOUS concentration. :) But even through that concentration, she's been willing to look me in the eye once or twice over the past day or so, so yay.

(and, yeah! she makes a good little hop. :) )

SO Cute!!!

Of course it brings me back to the days of my children's infancy. Alex especially loved to be swaddled and did that funny "O" face too. It cracked me up every time. I only managed to sorta capture it in photos once as you can find in this series of pics: http://significant.com/family/2002-July-23_Babies_Tupper/ (the ones where he's laying on his side).

I have no idea if it was a predictor of later personality, but he's turned out to be a very physical kid who is very competent with his body. Drew, who didn't do the "O" face (as I called it), is, er, a bit less sure of how to manipulate his body. ;)

She's beautiful!!

Oh my. She's beautiful. Super duper beautiful. Her face and her whole head, her forearms and hands and size and all of her. Super double douper beautiful.

(My little S. recently looked me in the eyes while nursing for what I think was the first time. I had her last July. Don't believe the "nursing gaze" hype.)

I think those receiving blankets are not specific to any hospital. In fact, I think it's federally mandated, possibly as part of No Child's Left Behind [Should Remain Without The Cover of a Receiving Blanket]. We took (after asking permission!) a few home from our hospital, many miles away from Mt. Auburn hospital, and I think I've seen them in many other baby photos from babies scattered far and wide.

Oh, she's growing up so much! It's such a relief to see a newborn turn into, you know, a baby.

Keep the photos coming!

[And, horrible dictu, I felt an actual attempt at letdown on one side, from boobies that have seen no action in 3.5 years.]

Aidan won't look at me when he's eating either. He's just like "mmm.... BOOBIE!" that is if he stays awake long enough. He also has the nursing callous.

Does Natalie have flakey skin? I swear Aidan is shedding his outer layer. I'm not worried about it because it doesn't seem to bother him at all... but I swear his feet look worse than my skin after the worse sunburn I've ever had.

It amazes me how different Aidan and Natalie look, but how alike their expressions are.
