We don't think she knows what they mean yet, since she cycles through about a thousand in the span of a few seconds. For example:

All of the baby books say, "at birth, your newborn can focus at a distance of 8 - 10 inches away from his face -- which is, conveniently, about the distance from your nipple to your face!" Well, that may be true, but it also seems completely irrelevant. Natalie absolutely refuses to look in my face when breastfeeding. She really doesn't appear to give a damn that there's a face attached to the breast, since she'd much rather look through the curtain of my hair, or where the wall meets the ceiling, or really anywhere OTHER than in my eyes. This was pronounced enough that I actually asked the internet if she was autistic. (It said "no! jeez! chill.")

I do love that it almost always puts her to sleep, though:

Even late, late at night.

Also, for a while, I was obsessed with this little lip-hangnail she had. It was all I could do not to lean in and lovingly gnaw it off for her.

Have you ever really LOOKED at your hands? Ha ha ha. Natalie seems to do this a lot. We think she's on drugs.

Rory (who, can you believe it, had never actually read Declare!) seems to have accepted Natalie in a half-wary, half-hungry kind of way:

And finally, the little fleecy snowsuit that we have to put on her in the carseat has perhaps a bit TOO much room to grow in:

Date: 2005-12-08 12:17 pm (UTC)Of course it brings me back to the days of my children's infancy. Alex especially loved to be swaddled and did that funny "O" face too. It cracked me up every time. I only managed to sorta capture it in photos once as you can find in this series of pics: http://significant.com/family/2002-July-23_Babies_Tupper/ (the ones where he's laying on his side).
I have no idea if it was a predictor of later personality, but he's turned out to be a very physical kid who is very competent with his body. Drew, who didn't do the "O" face (as I called it), is, er, a bit less sure of how to manipulate his body. ;)
She's beautiful!!

Date: 2005-12-10 08:56 pm (UTC)Does Natalie have flakey skin? I swear Aidan is shedding his outer layer. I'm not worried about it because it doesn't seem to bother him at all... but I swear his feet look worse than my skin after the worse sunburn I've ever had.
It amazes me how different Aidan and Natalie look, but how alike their expressions are.
