Why I am pissed off:

I had a nice long thoughtful post composed in my head about a song I was singing on the drive in to work and my parents and transitioning to parenthood, and now I can't write it because I'm too angry at some asshole who keeps going over my head before asking me questions, and who can't even be bothered spell my first name correctly.

Thank god this is not MY customer, but the customer of a coworker I'm covering for this week.

Why I am virtuous:

I did not write back and address him as "Keven".

Honey, your name isn't complicated.

It's just 4 letters!

How can someone POSSIBLY mess that up?

Then again, I often mess up the word "THE", so I suppose I have no room to comment. ;)

Long ago and far away I had Purchasing as one of my responsibilities, and there was a particular salesperson at a particular vendor who was always managing to do something or other to piss me off. So I'd intentionally mispell his name in order to drive him nuts. Especially on the frequent Wow did you guys fuck up again style of faxes that needed to be sent. Eventually we replaced them with a competent vendor, and I no longer had to mispell anyone's name.

This guy is competent, he's just an ass. It's mostly annoying as a symbol of how irrelevant he feels I am.

Yup, "Mollie". Over and over, today. Yesterday and the day before, he got it right. IT'S NOT HARD.

So, I really don't have a whole lot to complain about -- I imagine that Kristen/Christine/Kristine/Christinas get this a lot, as do Megan/Meghans and all kinds of other folks. It's just that this guy was an ass on TOP of ignoring basic details about me.

Oh, you totally get to complain!  Wrong names are not the right names, she says, tautologically speaking!

I was just amused by the misnomenclated thread, and wanted to contribute.

You should call him "Keben". Not only screwing up his spelling, but also making it give the impression of babytalk, as if he's not worth speaking to as an adult.

And you totally should! Now is the one time when you have the excuse for being rude or strange!

Back when I was named Vicky (long story having to do with immigration, the Social Security office and me being 13 and wanting to fit in), I lived in LA for two years, surrounded by native Spanish speakers.

Who couldn't pronounce "V" and thus called me "Beeckee." Drove me nuts. :)

Hm, so you pretty constantly get your name mispronounced no matter what it is don't you.

I think so, unless your name is "Bill" or "Sue".

Yep! It doesn't bother me, although I tend to correct people. Especially when they confuse me with [livejournal.com profile] lyonesse. :) (Our first names differ by one letter, and therefore by the length of the 'i' sound.)

Well, for me, my name is _always_* misspelled, and so I've come to perceive the correct spelling as an indication of particular care and respect, rather than perceiving the wrong spelling as sloppy. It just takes less energy that way.

*as in, if my name is spelled correctly on a form, it's probably because a non-native English speaker took down the information.

I take consolation that there are 467,000 google hits for Katherine Hepburn.

And BOTH my names are constantly misspelled. At least your last name is pretty common and comes with only one spelling. I didn't think my last name was all THAT uncommon, but it's a pretty familiar scene for me to come across a clerk taking down my name who seems to lose their motor control when I spell my last name, so alien is it to write the letters in that order.

And don't even get me started on my first name. My mother says that they decided to spell it that way because "it was the more common spelling". I'm like, were you HIGH? Or just that ignorant of the surrounding culture? (the latter, I'm completely sure.)

I've often wondered why I myself am so resistant to just changing how I spell my name to my own comfort. I always get envious of Becca, who just effortlessly switches around from Rebecca to Becca to Becka to Bekka to her middle name, as it suits her.

I was going to go all "NUH UH! I get Woodard or Woodworth at least as often as Woodward. . . " and then I remembered that that's (part of) why I changed it to Charles.
