In the dream, [livejournal.com profile] dilletante and I had been eating tempura because tempura makes it easier to crawl into the heating ducts.

Wait. Where do I start?

So, in the dream, D and I have a habit of exploring the Weird City on foot. However, in order to get to the Weird City, we have to rappel down someone else's skyscraper. Somehow, we discovered that we could do this by entering the ductwork in our apartment (basically the Hyde Park Tower place), crawling around for a very long time until we are in another building entirely, popping out of the ceiling into a stranger's apartment, and then sneaking quickly out the window.

We don't care about the stranger, see, we just want to get to Weird City! If the ducts let out onto the roof, that would be better, but we haven't found the roof exit yet, just the stranger's back office. But this time, I notice that the stranger has an LED headlamp sitting abandoned and dusty on a shelf. I pick it up, figuring I'll return it on the way back through with fresh batteries or something. Also, this time, one of us has to pee. So there is sneaking. It seems we're alone; we find the bathroom, and chat. As we start back to the back office, we see a young Indian girl in the entryway to the apartment holding a violin case. She's maybe 12 or 13, and looks very tentative. She sees us and looks more at ease: "Sorry I'm late, the weather is strange and my mom got lost. I practiced my piece this week but..." She trails off as she walks into a practice room. And then a neatly-dressed woman with blonde hair in a bun steps out of a bedroom and strides towards the practice room. D and I freeze behind a bit of wall: did she see us? Did she call the police? Can we still crawl out the window of a room right next to the violin practice room? When did the stranger take up with a violin teacher, anyway?

We stayed frozen behind the wall as I tried to figure out whether we should go out the window, go back up the ducts, hide somewhere and wait for her to leave, or just try to waltz out the front door and make a break for it. I also can't figure out if I should try to set the LED headlamp back in the front office or if I can leave it in the kitchen. And how are we going to get back to our place if we're stuck in Weird City? This worrying and weighing and considering was so strong that it actually woke me up. I worried myself awake.

I can't tell whether I have dreams of exploring this city a lot and my dream tonight was thwarted, or if I just had a solid background of exploring within the context of the dream. It feels like I have it a lot.

It was good tempura, though.

Hm, I wonder if kitfo ["Ethiopian style steak tartar seasoned with herbed butter sauce and hot chili powder (mitmita)," it's the amazing dish that thwarts my every attempt to diversify my Ethiopian food experience] has the same powers. I'd love to go spelunking tonight.

I'm curious: is this a recurring dream series? Maybe I don't have the background story to this, but I'm wondering if the setting is always the same. Do you go to the same apartment to get to Weird City?

Funny how HP Tower pops up in the oddest places...I still have dreams about that place too.

I can't figure out whether it's a recurring series of different dreams or whether, in this one dream, I was a person who habitually explored. I think it's a recurring set of dreams, but I don't remember my dreams very often once I wake up. At any rate, we did always use the same apartment to get to Weird City, and the owner was never home. That's why the whole thing was so startling.

I still have dreams about that place too.

There's something very iconic about it, isn't there? A lot of my dreams are set there, given how long it's been since we moved out.
