We had a fabulous 142-mile ride yesterday. Too bad it was supposed to be 250.

I'm not going to tell the story of yesterday chronologically, because (a) it doesn't make a very good yarn, and (b) that would mean that the sucky bits would overwhelm the parts that were fun and instructive and cool. So, instead, a list:

The Schmidt generator hub )

Drafting )

Kicking Ass and Taking Names )

My gear woes )

I'm strangely OK with it all. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't let down; I am. Paris-Brest-Paris only happens every four years, and to come through the three-speed-bike fiasco, through my injury, through the training and the planning, through buying David a new bike and messing with generator hubs and scheduling problems and all of it only to be defeated by a flat tire? Well, it feels silly. I wouldn't have predicted it in a thousand years. But that's how it is. We'll do the 600k ride, try for Boston-Montreal-Boston next year, and wind up with a lot more free time this summer. And that's not so bad, is it?

We had a few errands to run, so D and I just walked to Union Square and Harvard Square, and then took the long, scenic route back home. Oookay, so, I'm pretty sure that we couldn't have done that after either of the other two brevets. Also, I feel great. Also also, I just bought cinnamon honey from a newish random-foods store in Inman Square. ([livejournal.com profile] lyonesse, they didn't have vanilla -- I was looking for you.)

Also also also, the Onondaga Cycling Club has a 400k brevet that we could possibly still do as a qualifier. It's in 2 weeks. Maaaaaybe maybe maybe. I've already done the coming-to-a-peace-with-bailing thing, but what if I could make it anyway? It's very seductive. It would mean I'd miss a rather important little event, though. Pooh.
