contentless update
Sep. 23rd, 2003 10:11 amSick and snuffly and sleepy and beuuuuh. What on earth am I doing at work? I should have an afghan wrapped around my shoulders, bouillon in my hands, and trash on the television. And bunny slippers. !! !!
dilletante and I are undergoing some organizational revamping on the home front, which is satisfying to even think about. At work, I finally got a KVM switch, so I only have one monitor in use on my desk. It's like I've gone up to a master level of some skill, and I'm using it as much as possible. My desk is so clean! Only one monitor, not four! Look, I just hit this button, and suddenly I'm on my Oracle server! MAGIC! *cackle*
I've been in social hermit mode ever since we got back from Burning Man. Most nights, I've been hanging out at home with
dilletante and getting sleep. I'm toying with the idea of taking up a martial art (Tae Kwon Do? Gotta put these legs to *some* use), but I'm afraid I've become a bit jealous with my time. Not that I'm doing anything with it. This is probably related to being sick, hmm?
Anyway, don't let me breathe on you.

Second Martial Arts are cool. I would suggest looking into a throwing art, because although hand and feet arts are fun, they aren't useful from a self defense standpoint.
Wow you had four monitors? Crazyness.
Get better.

Date: 2003-09-23 08:00 am (UTC)If you really do decide to devote the time to a martial art, you should ask yourself seriously what your reasons for starting are. That should somewhat inform your choice of what art to study and who to study with. I am personally of the opinion that for most people in most situations, the choice of teacher is at least as important as the actual art being chosen.
You're not likely to breathe on me from way over there, but I still hope you get some good rest and feel better soon.

Date: 2003-09-24 07:57 am (UTC)My sense of it is, as a martial art, it would take a strong physicality in the legs, a propensity toward dynamic movement, and a calm, steady, long term approach. So, when I thought

Date: 2003-09-25 06:01 am (UTC)Two ways (or two people) come to mind. Seek out a very traditional (Hindu centric) yoga teacher and ask if they know of anyone practicing Kalarippayattu in the area. The second person would be a traditional Indian Ayurvedic healer / doctor. Basically I'd suggest finding a path into the Indian community. It's likely a practitioner of something so non-mainstream is going to be an "amateur" who practices the form for personal / cultural reasons. It’s unlikely you’ll find a dojo that lists it as a form they teach.
If you go looking, let me know how things turn out. I'd love to hear your impressions of the subject (especially if you take on the studies).
