Hey, look, it's not about hair!
Sep. 12th, 2003 04:53 pmSo, we showed up in Vegas and saw Zumanity, which D describes here. (Actually, I'd recommend reading his whole recent series of posts about Burning Man -- they're wonderful, and all I'm about to do is share a few pictures.) Then we left the blinkiness to hare off on an 11-hour drive into the deep desert to see... more blinkiness. A few highlights, or at least some moments when I remembered to pull out my camera:
So,

And us, the audience:

S and a parasol, M and a parasol:

The wedding party:

The "temple of gravity", a bunch of enormous granite blocks suspended in air:

David's back!

Best goddamn hair on the playa, but a sadly overexposed shot -- she's got dreadlocks tightly wrapped in brightly-colored thread. Apparently, it took 50 hours. 50! 50!!!

And of course, my own hair, about which I've been a weeee bit overexcited recently:

Sleepy

D:

D is a BLUR OF COMPUTERY GOODNESS:

"I'm bored. Let's drink water!"

YAAAY!

YAAAY!

What?
Lounging about in the dome:

Brother John and Cee in the RV. OK, it was a bit of a mess.

A all glitzy and shit:

Then there was The Burn. This was the first year I was in up close. I wanted to see D juggling fire in the performance:

It started out with a fireworks display. Very Times Fucking Square:

And then it blew up.
It was like watching a house fire.
Only, we were all taking pictures:

We are a death cult.

Burn night is loooong:

Sunday night was the much chiller, calmer burn of the Temple. We were late. Note: don't try to take pictures of BURNING BUILDINGS while you are RUNNING:

More fire, with art silhouetted in front:

EEK GAZEBO AAAIGH!:

Then there was a half-naked camp teardown BONANZA!

When we finally got back to Vegas, there had to be pictures. More pictures. The RV was part of us. We could not leave it. We had become part of its Aura of Stuff:

We tore ourselves away and took one last group shot:

Except that popular demand was for a shot without the timer, but with a HUGE MOLLY HEAD UP CLOSE:

Aaaand that's it. Next year, I'm going to try to actually take pictures of the interesting things while they are happening. It's just so... blinky!
