I'm also hoping for no rain in the area this weekend as it's my last chance for a while to get in a good ride on my (heavier, faster) bike for a while.

Wet or dry, go kick some ass.

heh. you know, when you posted about your first long ride on your new bike, the picture didn't load the first time i read it and i thought you were jan, who had just bought a new bicycle. you talked about 300 miles being a decent first ride of the season, leaving you time to have dinner and a shower, and my jaw was on the floor. "damn, he's hard-core!" i thought. "i'd like to be able to do our 400k (a mere 250 miles) in 24 hours, but..."

still shooting for that. :) we'll see.

Hah.

I think that I can safely say that neither I nor Jan is anywhere near that hard-core.

I don't consider 300 miles on my sort of bike to be hard-core at all, btw. I've done days that were more than 2 (or occasionally, 3) times as long as that and may have broken 1000 in 24 continuous hours a few times. Once I woke up on a ferry (not the most restful sleep) arriving from Newfoundland into Sydney NB, and went to bed at home in Cambridge. That was probably my longest riding day ever. I do 350 mile days as a matter of course. It's a very different perspective.

Are the 24 bicycling hours continuous, or spread out over a couple of days? I can't imagine bicycling for anywhere near 24 straight hours.

Eeesh! Iron Butt (http://www.ironbutt.com)! Wow.

For the 400k, the 24 hours will (hopefully) be continuous biking. For the 600k (40 hours) and 1200k (90 hours), the time is continuous, but you're expected to sleep some. That is, you get 90 hours, of which you might spend 15 asleep.

Yeah, but as I've never _planned_ a 1000+ mile day very far ahead of time, I also never bothered to do the documentation needed for the Iron Butt. I know that when I got on the Ferry in Newfoundland, for instance, I wasn't really planning on going all the way to Boston by the next night. Especially since that morning I had awakened in a small town in Labrador, off the other end of Newfoundland...

Are you planning on trying to do the 600k and 1200k at some point?

Perhaps I shouldn't get ahead of things; good luck on the 400!

we'd like to do paris-brest-paris (the 1200k) this year, as it's held every 4 years and this is one of the years. the 200k, 300k, 400k, and 600k are all qualifying rides for it (you need to do all 4), so...

so we'll see. :)

jan's roommate is trying to talk him into doing the boston-montreal-boston 1200k (which is held in the off years) next year...

Actually...

Doing Boston-Montreal-Boston is more HIS idea than mine. I want that on the record.

He's shooting for a century in August this year, and the Paul Bunyan Double Century next June -- 202 miles from the Twin Cities, around Lake Mille Lacs, and back.

He did decline going on the trip I'm doing in July: 85-75-rest day-75-85 to Duluth and back. Wimp!

That's unfair. I have very little vacation time built up.
Thppt.

That just means you have to do it even faster.

Skip the rest day. Wimp.

But that's the WHOLE POINT!

The trip is called DAY IN DULUTH. The rest day is half the fun!

Besides. I don't know if he's ready for 320 miles riding with Hugh the Killer Accountant, his new pal.

I hate you. Seriously. I'm going to make sure that every party guest has a chance to clean some of the house this weekend.
I'll be handing out fluffy white towels for them to work with.

Ya know.

Last year, there was a 3 day option:
165 miles on Friday.
DID on Saturday.
165 miles on Sunday.

Thanks. :) Personally, I'm reserving judgement until I actually do kick the pants off the ride (as opposed to stopping just over halfway through)... but every "yeah!" helps.
