Re: Good luck.
Date: 2003-05-29 02:18 pm (UTC)I think that I can safely say that neither I nor Jan is anywhere near that hard-core.
I don't consider 300 miles on my sort of bike to be hard-core at all, btw. I've done days that were more than 2 (or occasionally, 3) times as long as that and may have broken 1000 in 24 continuous hours a few times. Once I woke up on a ferry (not the most restful sleep) arriving from Newfoundland into Sydney NB, and went to bed at home in Cambridge. That was probably my longest riding day ever. I do 350 mile days as a matter of course. It's a very different perspective.
Are the 24 bicycling hours continuous, or spread out over a couple of days? I can't imagine bicycling for anywhere near 24 straight hours.

Date: 2003-05-29 02:30 pm (UTC)Eeesh! Iron Butt (http://www.ironbutt.com)! Wow.
For the 400k, the 24 hours will (hopefully) be continuous biking. For the 600k (40 hours) and 1200k (90 hours), the time is continuous, but you're expected to sleep some. That is, you get 90 hours, of which you might spend 15 asleep.
Re: Good luck.
Date: 2003-05-29 02:54 pm (UTC)Are you planning on trying to do the 600k and 1200k at some point?
Perhaps I shouldn't get ahead of things; good luck on the 400!

jan's roommate is trying to talk him into doing the boston-montreal-boston 1200k (which is held in the off years) next year...
Actually...
Date: 2003-05-30 06:00 am (UTC)He's shooting for a century in August this year, and the Paul Bunyan Double Century next June -- 202 miles from the Twin Cities, around Lake Mille Lacs, and back.
He did decline going on the trip I'm doing in July: 85-75-rest day-75-85 to Duluth and back. Wimp!

But that's the WHOLE POINT!
Date: 2003-05-30 09:22 am (UTC)Besides. I don't know if he's ready for 320 miles riding with Hugh the Killer Accountant, his new pal.
