Through various Unusual Procedures™ the eyes can be trained to read straight across each line and then down to the next one, and so on.
I had this done to me when I was in 4th and 5th grade. I can't do it now as well as I could then; just out of practice I think. But at the time, I had an ungodly fast reading speed. Now it's just like a minor demon.
