The knob that's facing you has pretty little diagrams on it.

Experimentation reveals that turning this knob one way makes water come out of the sink. Turning it back towards its starting position causes water to stop coming out of the sink, and start coming out of the shower. Balancing the knob delicately between those states causes water to come out of nothing, again.
