never figured this one out
Nov. 8th, 2006 12:44 pmA long time ago, my grandfather bought a huge piece of land in Virginia that ran up the side of a mountain. He built a house halfway up, with lots of trails all around it and a gorgeous view over the Blue Ridge mountains. It was not a long walk to the valley, where he had a barn that he raised cattle in for a while. Eventually, he stopped raising cattle -- I guess it got boring, and he moved on to something else, like metalworking or ham radio or whatever -- which freed him up to build a house on the top of the mountain, which is what he'd always wanted and why he bought that land in the first place. And yet, he never did. At first, he kind of stalled, but eventually, he admitted that if he did that, he wouldn't have any big dreams or goals left, and what would be the point?
I've never figured out if this showed self-knowledge or lack of imagination, but either way, I'm still fascinated by it. In general, he did not lack ... scope.
Would you build the house? This is totally not an allegory.
