I think, also, that the "don't complain to the person who has it worse" mentality robs them of an important social gift, which is being able to help your friends out.
The other day I went over to a friend's with hugs and brownies, because two bad things had collided in her world, and was feeling rather awkward because before [explody] hit, we'd needed to borrow her tile saw. I actually forgot about the tile saw until I was on my way out the door, and what I think was remarkable was how she LIT UP at the opportunity to help out. It seemed like asking to borrow her tiling supplies was the *best* thing I'd done.
