now if only I could get beer out of these things

As it turns out, Natalie does not like chocolate breastmilk. Seriously.

For as long as I can remember, drinking lots of apple juice has made me smell like apples. Not in a bad way -- it's just as if I dabbed a little eau de pomme in strategic locations all over my body. Still, I tend to avoid drinking it, because it's a little strange to be haunted by the scent of apples.

While I was pregnant, something similar started happening with chocolate. When [livejournal.com profile] dilletante went on a brownie-making kick for a while, I found myself smelling like cocoa. Now, I'm not a big chocolate-eater, so this didn't happen very often, but I did think it was funny. Postpartum, it didn't come up again until after Christmas. Suddenly, Natalie was grumpy and gassy, and it wasn't clear why. At roughly the same time, I noticed that everything I'd worn smelled like cocoa powder -- especially my bras.

HMMMMMMM.

Sure enough, when I cut out chocolate, she stopped having gas issues. But -- come on! Chocolate breastmilk! Isn't that supposed to be magical? Who doesn't want chocolate parents? (Yes, I know, there was probably a significant problem on her end because I didn't fully digest it, or I had problems with it, or something. Still.)

(Also: gas makes her so sad! I'd never seen a fart make someone cry before. So very sad.)

As for the pain at latch-on that I used to have, it is largely gone. I still have sensitive nipples, so that when she cluster-feeds, nursing every half hour or so for hours, my nipples go on strike and she gets a bottle. That way, I don't bleed and/or curse so much. I think that's better for everyone, really.

In other news, we're roughly diurnal, now! My day seems to start at 5 or so, which isn't ideal, but it'll do for a start. Hooray!

You know... there's a market for the chocolate breastmilk. I'm sure of it!

Does she get hiccups? I babysat a little girl who would get them and cry because she was this tiny baby and a hiccup was pretty much good for a full-body convulsion. So sad!

Yay for daytime schedules, though, and double yay for easier nursing! :)

I'm pretty sure that there are some foods I'm eating that are driving Jefferson bonkers, but I have yet to figure out what they are. It's so hard to try to figure out how long after I eat something that it shows up in my milk, and then how long after he drinks something that it would upset his little tummy. We're still working on narrowing it down...

Also, I'm so glad to hear that your latch is not so painful anymore! Jefferson makes me laugh now, I just have to get him roughly in the right area and then he's like a magnet -- he zeroes right in so quickly.

Please make breastmilk ice cream and/or cheese while you still can!

We've done it at Baitcon in the past, though not chocolate-breast-milk.

It needs extra butterfat added to work out right. Overall, it's not very remarkable. :)

hahahaha :)

Wow... you're lucky to have gotten by so well without too many gassy episodes.

So... I take it have you managed to avoid blow outs [1] thusfar?

Those will make *you* cry right along with her. THough I laughed when it happened to Aidan, only because he was so miserable, and then looked so utterly pleased with himself once he got it all out. (until he realized he had a dirty diaper, then he started screaming again)

I'm still trying to track down what makes Aidan so gassy. I've eliminated dairy (not it!), caffeine (definite not it) a lot of veggies (possible), fruit (not probable) and pre-packed food (likely culprits) and several other things... I think I just have a gassy child (though thankfully not a colicky one!)

[1] excessive gas-propelled poop that comes out with such force it sometimes makes it up to their necks? [2]

[2] I learned this term from my Dad, who apparently had this problem very frequently with Katie, we've only had two with Aidan thusfar

I knew a baby who was allergic to some stuff in cow's milk that got passed on through breast milk. He was constantly gassy and fussy and colicky and crying, until mom cut all dairy products out of her diet, and then he became an absolute angel! Nice when you can figure out what the problem is and do something about it. Happy lactating.

5am isn't so bad. Look me up sometime soon when I get back onto my early-morning schedule. :)

When I was a baby starkeymonster my mom couldn't eat strawberries because then her breast milk would give mea rash.
