the cliches of pregnancy

My office seems to have replaced the tradition of occasional afternoon margarita parties with one of occasional afternoon cook-offs. Today, the competition food was chili. Now, I might have problems these days with heartburn and indigestion, but spicy food doesn't seem to bother me at all. In fact, it's such a non-issue that I'd completely forgotten about the legions of pregnant women who can't stand spicy foods. As a result, I think I got more goggle-eyed stares and comments eating dabs of chili from different pots than I have doing any single other thing during pregnancy.

("Wow, should you really be EATING that?!" "Are you trying to induce labor?" "Is that a good idea?")

It was all in good humor, though, and I swear it was only a coincidence that the chili I liked the best was also the hottest one around.

Hey, maybe it gets the kid used to spicy foods!

Yeah! I figure that if I *can* eat interesting things happily, I *should*, since it has to be make things more interesting in there.

hmmm

chili is yummy.

ALSO, a pregnant friend of mine pointed out that papaya (real papaya, without sugar and crap in it) is Very Good for heartburn. Just thought I'd mention.

Chili is indeed yummy. Also, our cafeteria guy has promised to serve the winning chili recipe, which entertains me.

I've found that I can mostly control the heartburn by eating the right things in the right amounts, and by not sitting/lying in weird positions at the wrong times. But, still, I sometimes get it anyway, and I'd much rather have a glass of milk or something than pop antacids. And I know that papaya enzyme pills have helped settle my stomach in the past! So, thanks -- I'll definitely try papaya. :)

honestly not being macho

Correction: honestly not trying to be macho.

Plenty of people who read this journal could out-macho me with spiciness and I don't mind one little bit. But still, your statement may be closer to the truth than mine was. :)
