foodies: help!

If you wanted to eat one good meal in New York City, didn't eat meat (other than fish), and wanted reservations for this weekend, where would you go? Meat on the menu is absolutely fine, as long as there are nonmeat/fish options available as well.

Barbetta's (http://www.barbettarestaurant.com/). Gorgeous townhouse with a beautiful garden, and the Italian food is scrumptious, and the Italians do know their way around the fishies...

*cowers!* OK! OK! Going! Now!

Trust all of dobrovolets's food recommendations.

Oh, and there's always "Republic" if you want noodles.

I absolute adored Madhur Jaffrey's restaurant in midtown but I can't remember the name of it.

[identity profile] moominmolly.livejournal.com 2005-07-20 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm... Dawat (http://cityguide.aol.com/newyork/dining/venue.adp?sbid=106967358)?

Thanks!

[identity profile] on-reserve.livejournal.com 2005-07-20 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, that's the one! Mmmm. It was very pretty and elegant and had all the ritual of a fancy Indian dinner. The waiters were some of the politest I've ever met and the food was outstanding. A totally elegant yet relaxing meal.

[identity profile] on-reserve.livejournal.com 2005-07-20 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, you can make reservations and the prices were reasonable. Not cheap but reasonable ($14-$25ish) for entrees.

[identity profile] elvendoll.livejournal.com 2005-07-20 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
how nice of a place are you looking for?

since those requirements match my diet, the two places i've been itching to go are Yuka (all you can eat sushi for $18, 2nd ave between 81st and 82nd) and Mexican Radio, but neither one is the type of place that requires reservations.

[identity profile] moominmolly.livejournal.com 2005-07-20 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
As long as the food is great, I'm open to anything that's not superfancy. I don't want to go to the kind of restaurant where you *need* reservations weeks in advance, and I don't want to spend $40/entree, but anything below that is fair game.

I'd probably save all-you-can-eat sushi for a future trip, though. :)

Thanks!

[livejournal.com profile] elvendoll introduced me to Mexican Radio when we were last in NY and it was amazing! And I'm really picky about Mexican food.

And I remember there being lots of choices for Demi who also has those same dietary restrictions...

[personal profile] rosefox 2005-07-20 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmmmm.

Can you get more specific? That doesn't really narrow it down enough. *) Where in New York? What else do and don't you eat?

[identity profile] moominmolly.livejournal.com 2005-07-20 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
More specific? Oh my. Well, I'd go anywhere for The Best Meal Ever. Bonus points for something that's easily accessible -- I know nothing about New York, and we'll be in midtown somewhere, but I'd still voyage afield if it wasn't too taxing.

I also don't eat, uh, coconut milk and eggs, and I'm staying away from sushi for the duration of my pregnancy.

I have no preconceived notions about what KIND of food I want, other than "good", I'm afraid. :)

Which of the following words sound appealing: Ethnic, Steakhouse, Romantic, Coconut Sushi Omelets, Boisterous, Fork-free Dining, Spicy?

If you're eating non-sushi seafood, I would highly recommend Markt, on 14th Street and 9th Avenue in the hip and happening Meatpacking District (where I grew up). It's noisy as all get out, but it's easy to get to--plenty of buses down 9th and the A/C/E subways a block away--and the food is fabulous. They have a seafood stew that's just unbelievable, and of course they're Belgian and therefore the moules frites are not to be missed. I say this as someone who has identified all her life as a non-pescaterian, too!

If Markt is too loud or crowded, there are plenty of other options in the area (my favorite is Florent, which was there long before the neighborhood was trendy and has never lost its charm and character, and Pastis is great too). I'd be happy to show you around except that I will, ironically, be in Boston this weekend. Have a lovely time!

The New Leaf Cafe in Fort Tryon Park is great.

I can't help with Saturday night dinner, but..

[identity profile] spike.livejournal.com 2005-07-20 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Saturday lunch: Peanut Butter & Co (http://www.ilovepeanutbutter.com/) - the all-peanut-butter, all-the-time restaurant!
Saturday dinner: ? (I prefer low-key places like... uh... that Carribean place near the Roger Williams Hotel?)
Sunday breakfast: The Popover Cafe (http://www.popovercafe.com/). Guess what they're really good at making?

Thanks!

[identity profile] moominmolly.livejournal.com 2005-07-20 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooo, popovers! And I might well try to stop by the peanut butter place. :)

[identity profile] spike.livejournal.com 2005-07-20 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Supposedly, the Harvest Coop Market in Central Square stocks their spicy-hot peanut butter... I must try some!

[identity profile] wolfkitn.livejournal.com 2005-07-21 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
oh gosh, for a moment there i was hoping i'd read "supposedly, the harvest coop market in central square stocks their popovers!"

but alas. no.

So what DOES one eat with spicy peanut butter?

1. Try posting this to [livejournal.com profile] food_fiends!
2. Applewood in Brooklyn, WD-50, Hearth, Public, Hangawi, Blue Ribbon, and I could totally go on....but most definitely Applewood. Don't miss Applewood!

[identity profile] dr-memory.livejournal.com 2005-07-20 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Bugger, I was gonna say WD-50 as well.

[identity profile] trom.livejournal.com 2005-07-20 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
*laugh* so was I

[identity profile] moominmolly.livejournal.com 2005-07-20 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Applewood! I believe [livejournal.com profile] veek told me you'd recommended it and glowed about it herself.

I will post to [livejournal.com profile] food_fiends, and wind up with more choices than I can shake a breadstick at.

Knowing your appreciation of fine cheeses, I would recommend Artisanal.

Artisanal Fromagerie and Bistro

http://newyork.citysearch.com/profile/11351794/ Has a pretty good description of it.

I had a predictably awesome pastrami sandwich at the 2nd Ave Deli today. 2nd Avenue and 10th Street.
