hooray! *patpat*

I would like to pat myself on the back for a moment: Today, I actually got off my butt and made phone calls to find out where the practice rooms at BU are. Not only that, but I got in touch with the right guy, found out what I needed to do, did it, and then played a tiny bit. (Note: muscle memory is amazing stuff.) It was fantastic! This wasn't a huge task, or anything, but I'd been putting it off because it was never the thing I most needed to do. It wasn't ever really in the top ten. And yet: I did it anyway! And it was fun! It was actually super extra fun because the conversation went something like this:

Music dude: Okay, can I have your ID?
Me: Sure! Here you go. *hands over ID in which I have green hair, not the current purple*
MD: And you're with the, ahh, you work for the school of, um, Management?
Me: Yup!

Apparently I'm not the average business school type.

BUT SO! Now that I have patted myself on the back for completing a pretty mundane task, it occurs to me that I don't hear people pat themselves on the back for stuff nearly often enough! What have you done recently that you wouldn't normally crow about? Sorted some books? Taken stuff to Goodwill? Mopped the floor? Tell me about it!

I finally transplanted the basil seedlings I got back in April into a big pot outside! And birthed my latest crop of mushrooms into the humidifying chamber! I'm all cultivatey this week!

Hooray for planting plants!

I spent an hour writing the other night. I put very few words on paper, but did some good research and made some serious progress organizing what I'd already put on the page. I used my brain and my skillz, and it felt good!

I also finally went out and bought new running shoes and socks, since mine were older than dirt (and about that color).

[identity profile] moominmolly.livejournal.com 2008-05-30 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, excellent on both counts.

[identity profile] shadygroves.livejournal.com 2008-05-30 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I quit drinking Mountain Dew a few months ago. And beat the caffeine addiction, and have since given up gatorade as well.

I am now a water drinker *gasp*

and I took the car for an oil change. Despite having an apparent bad karma issue with mechanics. (you can read my journal entry and just understand why)

[identity profile] moominmolly.livejournal.com 2008-05-30 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, quitting an addiction is totally not minor. Go you!

[identity profile] shadygroves.livejournal.com 2008-05-30 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I just have to say to you though, that knowing you want to do something and actually going out and making it happen that is one of my "Yay! things!" It always delights me and makes me want to crow for someone who makes things happen for themselves.... so

pat pat pat Crow Crow Crow for you too!

and also for making everyone else stop and look at their life and realize "Hey I did it!"

[identity profile] pseydtonne.livejournal.com 2008-05-31 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
Welcome to the Off Caffeine Club! I went through my second run at withdrawal last year and it's been about five cups of caffeine in the last twelve months.

Isn't the world weird now? It's like everyone else is strung out.

[identity profile] shadygroves.livejournal.com 2008-06-02 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
No Caffeine Cold Turkey, I swear I must have yawned every 5 minutes if not more. But I feel like I sort of cheated with quitting.... I had the flu. It hurt to drink anything, and I knew that being sick and soda just wasn't healthy. By the time I felt well again, I didn't even want to taste it. Which began my quest to find a water that I liked.

But yay! I have quit caffeine before and then wham! one sip and I am hooked again... so I am determined no more caffeine sodas for me. Occasionally I have a glass of sweet tea, but that is it.

I was PMSing last night, and still managed to hit the big things on my to-do list: collect and do 2 loads of laundry, go food shopping and eat dinner. I even managed to get all the important things on my shopping list!

(And can I say that pinpointing PMS is so much weirder when there's no bleeding involved?! Weird and sometimes difficult.)

[identity profile] moominmolly.livejournal.com 2008-05-30 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
You are mighty productive! I'm almost certain that I would have missed something vital on my shopping list under those conditions. :)

i paid three bills online!

[identity profile] moominmolly.livejournal.com 2008-05-30 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Hurrah! Triumph! I paid one yesterday. w00t!

I paid bills too! Without anyone threatening to disconnect something or anything!

Yesterday I finished a paragraph that has been paralysing me. Today I have worked with a fair degree of efficiency. I also decided that my tools' failings were not my failings and bought new tools. (ugh money ugh)

[identity profile] moominmolly.livejournal.com 2008-05-30 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Lack of paralysis = awesome! Seriously. Rah rah rah!

[identity profile] harimad.livejournal.com 2008-05-30 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
This is exactly the sort of task that gets put off so much. You haven't the faintest idea of where to start or what's really going to be involved. These factors combine to make the task highly procrastinatable.

Truly minor task that was bugging me: I cut up the fudge I made last week. It's for the division picnic next week and it used up the nuts that have been sitting around. Thus instead of feeling silly for not having done that (and taking up inordinate amounts of fridge space), I can feel good for one, not leaving my contribution to the division picnic to the last minute and two, getting that much closer to clearing out my cabinets.[1]

I find that when I'm cranky and itching and feeling I never get anything done, getting a whole bunch of these small tasks done already make me feel much better. (Which is how I end up with a stack of difficult tasks leftover but that's another story.)

[1] Every few years I clear out the foods that accumulate. Used to be I moved that often, making the task easy. Now I have to make a more concerted effort. Next step: coconut! I've already made coconut-choc chip[2] cookie bars. What else can I do? No alcohol, no nuts.

[2] Can you believe that, somehow, chocolate accumulated?! Me neither.

[identity profile] moominmolly.livejournal.com 2008-05-30 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Coconut like shredded dried coconut? I have a weakness for 7 layer bars (http://www.cooks.com/rec/doc/0,1910,158178-233206,00.html)! And you're exactly right about how procrasinatable that kind of task is. I'm actually amazed I did it so quickly. :)

[identity profile] dancingwolfgrrl.livejournal.com 2008-05-30 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmmm, seven layer bars.

This is going to sound weird, but add it to bran muffins.

[identity profile] harimad.livejournal.com 2008-05-30 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Alas, 7 Layer Bars would be redundant (even if - especially if - I left out the nuts). The bars I made could be described as 5 Layer Bars, slightly stirred: shortbready bottom layer, butter/sugar/coconut/choc top layer.

Take a stroll over to my LJ (harimad) to see what I'm thinking of making with the sweetened shredded dried coconut.

[identity profile] moonshadow.livejournal.com 2008-05-30 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Coconut is great in curry, as well as in carrot cake.

[identity profile] pseydtonne.livejournal.com 2008-05-31 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Not really related to anything... I just love how meaty and milky coconut can be. It feels treyf even though it's totally clean.

[identity profile] veek.livejournal.com 2008-05-30 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I've earned enough money to pay the bills and have some breathing room. And set life up so that this trend will continue, hopefully indefinitely. Rock the fuck on.

And I've been reading. Paper books. For hours at a time. Usually I'm too scattered to do that, but have recently had more success staying away from the internets in my spare time.

Oh, and I've been spending more time with teh kitties. This is important.

[identity profile] moominmolly.livejournal.com 2008-05-30 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
RTFO! Bills and books! I've also recently been reading books. It feels AWESOME.

[identity profile] keyne.livejournal.com 2008-05-31 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
It does, yeah. I've been hitting the books again too -- I'd almost forgotten, the last few months, how much my life used to be about books.

I've also been calling dozens of places about change-of-address, and either sorting, packing, or getting rid of stuff pretty much every day.

[identity profile] harimad.livejournal.com 2008-06-02 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
and either sorting, packing, or getting rid of stuff pretty much every day

Definitely not-minor, in your situation. But very good. I always feel very satisfied when I sort/pack/organize something, how about you?

Has anyone started a betting pool on how many books you're going to have immediately post-move?

[identity profile] moonshadow.livejournal.com 2008-05-30 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Go you for paying the bills!

[identity profile] jacflash.livejournal.com 2008-05-30 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I made a big health-related change, specifically in the way I manage a longstanding medical condition. It's a big shift in mindset as well as actual therapeutic approach, it will be absolutely profound if it works the way my doctor and I think it will, and after months of thinking about it, I went ahead and started it today!

[identity profile] moominmolly.livejournal.com 2008-05-30 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh! Huh! Well, cool! I hope that works out well. Health stuff is huge. I'm currently waiting to hear how my event monitor tests went, which I'd been putting off for years...

[identity profile] fanw.livejournal.com 2008-05-30 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
In the spirit of minor things, this morning I woke up extra early and ran to the grocery store to pick up two boxes of kitty litter. This is so that I'm only asking my roommate to change the litter while I'm gone for the weekend instead of also to BUY it! (See previous trips and unthinkingness.) So, um, I'm improving?!

[identity profile] muckefuck.livejournal.com 2008-05-30 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't get to any book sorting (although I did finally get the books off the coffee table), but I did wash all the dishes in-between four loads of laundry!

[identity profile] goat.livejournal.com 2008-05-30 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I decided on my Thank You cards! (but...uhhh..had Ted order them for me)

[identity profile] goat.livejournal.com 2008-05-30 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, and I've nearly rid myself and my kitten of ringworm. Next up: massive laundry & general cleaning with bleach.

I'm kicking ass on a piece of code right now.

(well, and occasionally glancing at LJ, evidently)

[identity profile] moonshadow.livejournal.com 2008-05-30 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I called my aunt and told her we would have to reschedule our visit. Oh I procrastinated hard on that one. But now it's done. Sort of. She wasn't there, but I left an apologetic message...

I also called the billing department that billed the wrong insurance on my behalf and left them new information. This is especially notable because they are only open M-Th 9-1, making it a true pain in my ass to call them because by the time I would think of it, it would be afternoon. Or Friday.

[identity profile] ukelele.livejournal.com 2008-05-30 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Made a couple of kids' lives better in small ways.

Actually folded and put away the damn laundry and cleaned my room a bit. (That never happens. Where are my laundry-folding robots?)

Called the lawyer in re our inchingly slow condoization (I never do bureaumancy either).

I have been managing to do both self-care as I go through some rough stuff and continue to get academic work done. Not loads of academic work, not huge vasty quantities, but some, every work day.

[identity profile] hitchhiker.livejournal.com 2008-05-30 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
i went and bought packing paper so i can mail stuff out tomorrow (been sitting waiting to be packed and mailed for weeks) :) also, have you seen [livejournal.com profile] beaversoncrack?

[identity profile] pseydtonne.livejournal.com 2008-05-31 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
I realigned my sleep schedule so that I can leave work at 8 a.m. on Monday and start driving to Virginia during the day (I'm staying in DC that night).

Man, there is so much sunlight out there when you're awake at noon...

I've also packed a little.

[identity profile] fishfoo.livejournal.com 2008-05-31 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
I quit my job.

[identity profile] shadygroves.livejournal.com 2008-05-31 11:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, love for you this is a very good thing. That was a toxic situation for you. You deserve better, so I am proud of you for quitting.

pat pat pat

I made our formerly stuff-filled back porch a possible and also nice place to sit.

I took three bins of summer clothes up to our second floor apartment from the basement, switched out the winter clothes (and had [livejournal.com profile] imlad do the same with his), and got the bins back into the basement the next day.

Whoa.
