How do you help someone feel like life is worth living when they've basically just given up and decided to wait to die?

You'd think I'd be good at solving this one, but I'm not.

It sounds awful, but if he feels his life is not worth living, then at least he can live for someone else. If you're really concerned, give him timelines like "can't wait to see you at Xmas" or "I just want you to see N do X, Y, or Z". Brain chemistry and circumstances may make him unable to appreciate anything now. What you can do is get him to survive long enough to have a chance to get out of that brain chemistry or circumstance.
