neither cute nor fluffy but definitely awesome

Have you ever seen the Penny Arcade about Claw Shrimp? Well, they're real. Watch the video on the second post about the "pistol shrimp". That shark isn't bad, either, but jesus, pistol shrimp.

Oh my. However did you come upon this?:)

That shark is so many kinds of NOT RIGHT. But Japanese seems just right for the narration.

I've decided to quit grad school and devote my life to learning how to snap my fingers underwater so hard it can stun or kill my enemies.

Okay, so the pistol shrimp /was/ pretty cool, but what about the awesome space they were in? What the heck was that? At first I thought a sunken luxury liner or something, but then there was an iron bed frame??? I want to go diving there!

I know people who know people.

That's better than bog snorkeling. Holy crap, I want to do that.

HEE!

[identity profile] bloodstones.livejournal.com 2008-12-04 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. I don't remember if I made it or stole it, but you're certainly welcome to steal it if you want.

You've been bog snorkeling??

[identity profile] miss-chance.livejournal.com 2008-12-04 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish I could tell you how awesome bike-snorkling is, but I'm afraid I got it as a still out of a film & have never done it either. I, too, totally want to try it!

[identity profile] moominmolly.livejournal.com 2008-12-04 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Alas, no! But how much cooler is bike-scuba?!

I'm now wondering if the Thylacine inspired the looks of Violator (http://www.solidimagearts.com/Analog/analog_violator.html).

[identity profile] veek.livejournal.com 2008-12-04 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
All the way cooler.

Well, you can just rock me to sleep tonight.

Between a shrimp that evolved a gun and the Alien-like jaws of the Goblin shark, I'm not sure which will give me worse nightmares.
Of course I had to look.

[identity profile] goat.livejournal.com 2008-12-04 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
temperature of the sun?!!?!?!?!!!!!

More than you wanted to know. Maybe literally.

[identity profile] signsoflife.livejournal.com 2008-12-04 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"Alien-like jaws" are actually remarkable common in marine vertebrates. Moray eels are even more similar to Geiger's Alien; they have a bony evertible pharanx. They need it because they can't pull prey into their guts by suction like most ambush fish, because their body size is constrained by their hidey-holes.*

RIGHT?! Also, less urgently but still: sonoluminescence?

[identity profile] palmir.livejournal.com 2008-12-04 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
What the fuck?! Snakes can fly?! I quit life!

[identity profile] goat.livejournal.com 2008-12-05 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
....I totally missed that the first time! Holy moly!
