Yay, raising up geeks!

That does not rhyme.

[identity profile] crs.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
?

[identity profile] moominmolly.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
The doctor usually says "NO MORE MONKEYS JUMPING ON THE BED!", but this version had Natalie using sed rather than monkeys and head trauma.

[identity profile] moominmolly.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
When confronted with this claim, he says: "it's free verse."

[identity profile] aroraborealis.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Well, sure. Who's going to pay for a rhyme that doesn't rhyme?

[identity profile] moominmolly.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
To some degree, this may be unavoidable.

[livejournal.com profile] barbarakitten_t calls it "breeding for gamers". They're on their third generation.

Oh my. I think you should reprint your localized geek versions of nursery rhymes, for the benefit of those of us with kids at home.

This made me giddy with joy.

at this rate she'll be metabolizing lisp by the age of two!

the fabric i just got says "no more FUNKY monkeys..."

[identity profile] uberjay.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 08:01 am (UTC)(link)
Oh good lord. I'm way too punchy to be reading this kind of stuff right now. The sleep—it calls me!

Apropos of nothing. (except that it's geeky, awesome, and I just read it on my friends list... ;)

[identity profile] bemocked.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
not only does it not rhyme - which is tolerable, BUT what is troubling for me in trying to recite the modified version is that the number of syllables is off, which throws off the rhythm/meter awfully.

There's a difference?

[identity profile] moominmolly.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, wait, are you knocking sed in my journal? sed is my friend, and I will brook no such nonsense around here!

[identity profile] dancingwolfgrrl.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I nominate "The standard text editor is ed!"

[identity profile] moominmolly.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
No, see, the doctor recites his line in a totally humorless and unmusical way. It doesn't MATTER that it doesn't scan!

[identity profile] moominmolly.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Then I am doing my job correctly.

[identity profile] dancingwolfgrrl.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Subtlety in nursery rhymes? Is that even allowed? :)

[identity profile] ratatosk.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Awwww! That's so cute! But now you have to illustrate it.

NEXT ON FOX: WHEN GEEKS BREED!!!

[identity profile] laura47.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
that was me.

Or possibly WHEN GEEKS SPAWN?

with a sequel WHEN GEEK BABIES ATTACK?

viscious toddler armies fighting over emacs vs. vi....

[identity profile] valancy17.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I second that, and I don't even have kids at home. I just think they'd be funny. :)

But it's a lie!!

[identity profile] kmhoofnagle.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
VI is the standard text editor (dammit. stomp. stomp). Our children can have text editor wars.

Re: But it's a lie!!

[identity profile] moominmolly.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh! I most often use vi (vim, really), but I will accept N no matter what editor she chooses. :)

The line is from the old ed man page (http://roguelife.org/~fujita/COOKIES/HISTORY/V6/ed.1.html). It is one of those lines that was patently untrue for so long as to become ridiculous.

Re: But it's a lie!!

[identity profile] hitchhiker.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I just want an EDitor!! Not a "viitor". Not a "emacsitor". Those aren't even WORDS!!!! ED! ED! ED IS THE STANDARD!!! TEXT EDITOR. (http://www.gnu.org/fun/jokes/ed.msg.html)

Re: But it's a lie!!

[identity profile] moominmolly.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
YES! THANK you.

Re: But it's a lie!!

[identity profile] hitchhiker.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
that bit cracks me up every time :)

[identity profile] pekmez.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
hm. I don't think my little monkey cares which text editor I'm using, as long as she can try to help me type new things in it.

The livejournal text entry box is just fine, for example:
