the two main sources of work at my job are 1) large projects that we sysadmins identify as needing to be done and 2) users and their problems. at any given time, i usually have one or two large projects going, sometimes with deadlines; other days there are sufficient user help requests to fill up my day, and i never get to touch a project. the busy days happen when a large project is nearing deadline, and i must devote a significant chunk of the day to it, and that day happens to coincide with a high volume of user help requests. then, of course, there are the days when something blows up in the machine room and we lose something critical (email, firewall, connectivity to outside world, something like that). days like that are very pleasant when they're over.
