Sep. 20th, 2002 10:40 amWow!
So, the house was great. It has its drawbacks: there's no driveway, no laundry, the ranges are electric, and the basement is a bit dark. But there are two main floors with several large rooms and a kitchen and bathroom each. Plus, there's a sexy finished attic space and a finished basement. The ceilings are high. The floors are wood, and could probably use a resanding, but are in decent shape as-is. There's space for David and I, C and C-prime, weights, kids, living space, and a bike/tool room with space left over to do with as we see fit.
There's a fenced-in lawn in the back that's surprisingly large for Somerville. There's a little concrete area with some chairs, and then lots of grass and a little vegetable patch. Plenty of room to barbecue, or learn to crack a 6' whip, or burn things, all without disturbing the neighbors (too much).
The second+attic area has its own entrance, as does the basement, but all of them also connect within the house. Those separate outside entrances seem to be added on and are less robust than the rest of the house. Also, there seems to be a space that was once a front porch but has been converted into a semi-habitable room.
So, basically, I like it! We know what the area's like, there's parking on the street, and it's within our price range. It went on the market yesterday, and we're going to try and make an offer. Wow!

Date: 2002-09-20 08:22 pm (UTC)Actually, it's really fun being a crash pad. Just offered our place as a crash pad for Winter Offensive (http://www.multimanpublishing.com/news_text.php?nw_id=25). Doubt anyone will take me up on the offer (the people I offered crash space to all live in the Midwest), but the very prospect makes me all tingly inside.
Then again, I'm weird like that.

Just like that? You're weird like a lot of ways, darling.
Kick ass!!!

Date: 2002-09-20 09:28 am (UTC)Floors are (I have discovered) not impossible to sand and refinish, but you should take into account that this is easier done before you move in. ;) I would plan a good two weeks to do a decent job on a good-sized floor. Take into account that the process is (or at least, I think it should be) filling in cracks with wood putty, sanding down the floor with the big rental drum sander equipment, sanding the edges that the big rental drum sander won't reach (using Vicka's or our mid-sized sander), sanding the corners using an even smaller sander or doing it by hand, restaining the floor (which should happen if you're having to use wood putty), applying two coats of polyurethane (which takes 2-3 days of nonhumidity to dry per coat), and then doing at least some touch-up of the paint on the edges of the rooms. Now is a good time to decide if you want to repaint, as well. The good news is that this whole process will take less time if the floors are currently unstained, as you won't have to nitpickingly sand every single inch of the floor.
Also, I am weirded out by the concrete I see in the Boston area sometimes. I heard that some people do that to their yards when there's lead in the soil or something that would make gardening dangerous. You might want to check that out.
Other than that, sounds great! Good luck! :)

Date: 2002-09-20 09:41 am (UTC)It's not a concrete lawn, there's just a little area around the house that's not grass. Behind that, there is a large grassy area. And there should be room for a washer/dryer somewhere.
