Aug. 9th, 2002 01:11 pm...and slowly, I let yesterday's news trickle into today's journal.
The skate out to work was lovely. The skate back made me feel like my leg was breaking. I think the padding in my skates is wearing out. After getting all warm and sweaty in the morning, the poor things didn't really hold up to heavy use in the afternoon. At first, it felt like I'd just laced my skates too tight, even though I could move my ankle around. I tried shifting the velcro strap and relacing, but nothing made the pain on the side of my leg go away. Eventually, I had to stop and sit down since any motion at all led to shooting pains up my right lower leg.
This same thing happened a couple of times in Amsterdam when I did a lot of skating over the course of a day, but then, I had just figured I'd laced my skates wrong. The pain never got this bad, then, and I was always able to make it home. This time, I had to bum a ride!
quinnclub actually drove out to Arlington and picked me up in front of the Trader Joe's, for which I am incredibly grateful.
I'm not permanently injured or anything. Taking the skates off and sitting down for a while seemed to make everything better. I do think, though, that their innards have degraded to a point where I can't take them out for more than, say, 10 or 15 miles without risking leg pain. The pain has gotten worse each time I've had it, so I think that the problem with the boot is steadily getting worse. That stinks, especially since I just replaced my bearings! Zoooooom! Hrumph. These puppies have had a good run, seeing hundreds of miles over three full years of use, so I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised they're showing structural signs of wear.
