Why is it that people who want desperately to be heard have a fundamental inability to listen? I feel like saying, "breathe for a second! dude! I'm here to help! I am actively working to help you!"

probably they're so preoccupied with remembering all they want to say, that they just wait for pauses in the general environmental noise to create their own.
And when the mind is preoccupied with certain things, it's hard to notice whats actually going on around you. You may be aware of your surrounding on a certain level, but you don't actually experience it.
