One of my friends used to spend summers with her mom far away, and one summer, we sent an audiotape back and forth with chatty little "letters". I don't know where it ended up, but at some point in high school (so, at least 7 years later), we found and listened to it. It was a huge kick. Ever since then, I've thought people should take audiotapes as well as photos of kids.
Somewhere in my parents' house there is a record that my grandfather made years and years ago, like a recorded letter, that one of his friends found when they were moving, and sent to my dad, and hearing his voice for the first time in more than 20 years just gave him chills. I look for it whenever I'm home, because I would love to convert it to mp3 -- he only ever listened to it that once, for fear it would be damaged or something. This reminded me of that, and made me well up a bit.
My brother actually went through a bunch of audiotapes that my dad made of us growing up -- it was mostly my two brothers, before I was born, but there were a few of me (here's (http://www.intrepidheroines.net/personal/merrily.mp3) another of me singing). He did this a year or two after they died, and I have no idea how he got through listening to them have conversations with us. At any rate, he converted all of the fun bits to mp3 while he was doing it out of basically the same fear.
Thank you for reminding me... my parents have, somewhere, a couple of reel-to-reels' worth of audio recordings of me as a kid. Well, not just me, but things like me singing with mom and us decorating the tree for New Year's (uh, it was Soviet Union, pretend it's a Christmas tree) when I was 4, I believe, breaking the biggest ornament and wailing over it, etc. etc. There are voices of my grandparents in the background, and wow, I should really find these and get them into listen-able state (I think we had some issues finding a reel-to-reel with the correct speed, so I had a munchkin version of them that I needed to turn into regular and it never worked quite right).
