Ran with [livejournal.com profile] lyonesse and [livejournal.com profile] dilletante this morning. I think that's the first time I've run a mile, non-stop, in under 10 minutes. It might not be an accomplishment in many parts of the world, but here in my little corner, it is. So yay. I've also finally been sold on the virtues of double-knotting my shoelaces, since the right was untied for the last 1/4 mile and the left untied for the last 1/2. I'd like to try this running thing again; I promise I'll be less stupid about ramping up this time.

I have an appointment with the sports doctor today -- I know my concerns are still valid concerns, but it feels funny to still be going even though I'm biking a whole lot less. I don't think we're even going to do the 600k this weekend. We could. It'll probably even be nice out. I just... don't feel like it! We'll probably do something else wacky instead, but something less strenuous. Anyway, my knees and ankles are generally happier than they were two weeks ago, so maybe a bit of time off has been a good thing.

I'm...more leet than you at something physical? Whoa. Yikes.

(I ran a mile recently just to see if I could still do it in 10 (yes, yay biking) and when I was actually in practice (years ago...) I could do under 8. These days, it seems a bit shin-splinty, so I prefer the biking.)

Wow. Astonishing.

Hee. Yup! Go you! I'm impressed. Maybe I'll run an 8 minute mile before I die.

I've always hated running, and always been terrible at it. I'm enjoying it more this time 'round. Anyway, this is one of the reasons "working on running" is a valid summertime goal...

I never particularly enjoyed running, but I did a lot of it one summer (at CTY, when all my friends were too old to attend so I had a lot of activity periods to burn ;). I liked it as a form of exercise because I could do it on my own and I could set clear goals and see clear progress -- "I want to be able to run a mile and a half" or "I want to run a mile faster than I did last week" or "I want to run a mile in under (10, 9, 8) minutes." I like concrete goals, exercise-wise.

Wait, you can bike 600k in a weekend without a problem, but have a tough time running a mile in under 10 minutes? Boggle.

I never claimed to have my priorities in order. :)

I have a long-standing hatred for running that I only started to get over last year; unfortunately, I got so gung-ho so quickly that I injured my achilles tendon and couldn't run (or bike or do much of anything besides rollerblade) for almost a year. Anyway, I'm *very very* new at running, so I'm still proud of doing a single mile without a walk break, and, realistically, I'm not sure I'll ever get much faster than just-under-ten-minute miles. Baby steps. If I end up having similar strengths in running as I do in biking, I'll try to build up to silly distances but I'll probably still stick around that time frame. :P I think endurance is all about being more persistent thn you really have logical reason to be.

I'm hoping this year will be better. :)

Well, given, say, your sprint speed, which I am assuming to be at least not-overly-far-below-average, I'd have thought the stamina built up in your leg muscles and lungs would make under 10, or even under 8 minutes easy...

You might well think, but it seems that the endurance needed to turn seconds into minutes is not the same as the endurance required to turn minutes into hours, or hours into hours-upon-hours. Short distances are a limitation of mine. (That's why I got into the whole uberendurance thing.) It's a limitation that can probably be overcome -- maybe even easily, who knows? -- but I'm hardly an athletic powerhouse who can run a 25-minute 5k without training.

Ahh, I see. Whereas I am almost entirely fast-twitch muscle. I envy one of my friends who has insane natural athleticism and can go both ways.

So, what's your 50 meter swim time compared with 500m and 5000m? Similar trend?

Yeah, my swim time is the same way. Or anything, really; if I can do it for 45 minutes, I can do it at that pace all day.

Phhhh! I would, too. :)
